The rifle seemed to be a modified Springfield M1 Garand, which is fed through a 8 Round Clip/En Bloc Magazine which is inserted through the top (Hence why the scope is mounted forward to leave the room/access) and is a semi automatic weapon, so technically he wouldn't have needed to pull the charging handle back each time.
Either it's some sort of weird modification or they tried to simulate a bolt action rifle which would require manual reloading for each round for dramatic effect perhaps.
So to answer your question: 8 Rounds in the Rifle. Technically you can reload it pretty quickly though, so he might have easily slipped another clip into the rifle in a second.
