The book's long journey to a complete English translation
The story of how the book Çalikuşu finally arrived at a complete English translation just under a year ago is a cool story.
The original book was written by Turkish author Reşat Nuri Güntekin in 1922. Sir Wyndham Deedes translated the first four parts of the book into English in 1949; however, he didn't translate the fifth and final part for some reason. The English translation remained incomplete for nearly 70 more years.
When Netflix started airing Çalikuşu a few years ago, a lady in Canada fell in love with the characters of Kamran and Feride, but she was so disappointed that the series was cancelled before telling the full story. Nor was there a complete English translation of the book to find out what happened. The woman's daughter stepped in, got permission from Deede's descendants to use the first four translated parts, and had a Turkish friend of hers translate the final part. The complete English translation was published in September 2018.
I can partially give credit and thanks to Netflix for the fact I can read the complete book and know what happened where the TV series left off. In addition, I can thank a mother's love for two superb characters and a daughter's love for her mother. It's a sweet story to me.
