Terrible lazy ending with no resolution

I didn't mind the slow pacing of this film or the dark depressing nature of it.

But the writer/director of this film revealed herself in the final scenes, to be lazy at being both writer and director.

SPOILER WARNING
The central plot of the film, resolving this dispute between workers and management is abruptly brought to an end, with no real resolution and aftermath.
That is just lazy. It's very easy to create a conflict in a story to flesh out a plot... wrapping it up takes more... or you can do what this writer did and just end the story without resolving anything.

Also lazy was leaving the story of the parents who lost their son, including a wife having an affair, completely left unresolved, was even more lazy.
No dialog was even written for the bi reveal at the end where the parents learn their son died.
They are shown, in one shot, silently through a window, seen in the distance physically reacting to the bad news.
Was this the last day of shooting and they were losing the light?
Did the director just say "the hell with getting performances out of my actors... I'll just shoot them out of focus from a distance and deny the audience any character resolution.

Please don't let this woman make more films

It was all finalised as far as I was concerned. The two protagonists both decided to tell the truth. The body would be found, the mining company and the CEO would be found guilty.

I think it was very good... especially for an Indie film.

The ending did seem a little hurried....
She could have totally flushed out resolutions on the 2 story lines..
but it was an enjoyable experience.

She created an interesting story and characters.
I liked the music.. and feel.

I would much rather see more of these than all the superhero movies being made.

I completely agree with you. There are a lot of movies like this lately that just "end." It's like every director is following the Christopher Nolan, "Inception" rule book and thinks it will elevate their movie to leave out key plot points in the end so people speak about them after. That's not what happened in Inception.

This movie never completes the arc of the boy and his brother with Down's (one of the best parts of the movie), it never completes the arc of the boy and his mother, it doesn't show enough of what happens to the boy after they discover what he did, there is no discussion of the marriage issues that the Doyle's had, they don't show enough of the blow back from the mining accident, it's just as you described perfectly, "lazy." This has nothing to do with being "spoon fed" every detail. This is just about respecting the viewer enough to bring at least some of the key points to a conclusion.

this movie could have actually been an 8 or a 9. I gave it a 5 and I think that was generous.

Respecting the viewer means we are given license to understand what happened by way of our own life experiences. The ending was clear and beautiful. The truth was told without having to see the ramifications. Obviously the son with Down's also had his own conflict hence the bed wetting. He loved his brother so much he was willing to keep the truth quiet even though it was consuming him. The truth also obviously set him free. The parent's anguish is apparent through the window and I thank the director for trusting me to absorb their pain. The affair was the gift of returning to life in order to begin closure. This quiet film was a 9 in my ratings.

Well said and i completely agree.

This movie had many qualities. I gave it an 8.

The second the movie ended i knew there would be dozens of whiners on IMDB.

These people can't see the art in the project. They require closure and formula.

These are the people who wait in line to see the new release of Star Wars.

As far as lazy goes, we have ourselves a lazy viewer in the OP.
I would say the magic number is around 25 or 30 - the OP's age and/or IQ.
Go watch Your hunger games.

I see that those of us who actually want a movie that isnt completely lazy are not well liked in this discussion.
Im not here for a popularity contest. In other posts I have applauded the actors and even given a decent commendation to the plot (as far as it goes).
I resent the notion that all I can grasp is Star wars or Hunger games. I actually haven't seen hunger games and although I have seen Star wars, Its not a movie that excites me all that much. I DO respect the work that goes into it as well as the performances.

When you have a decent plot idea and more than capable actors that deliver 100% in this movie, I dont simply dismiss or discredit it. HOWEVER I DO NOT excuse the fact that this movie COULD have been SO MUCH MORE but was dragged down by stupid and lazy directing and writing and a failure to address even basic questions or resolve ANYTHING that has been presented.

People can chose to ignore these facts; they can chose to IMAGINE some sort of concluding scenario but do we actually know ANYTHING of what was really going on.
If this is the way things are supposed to work, then maybe we should go to a restaurant order a meal and have the waiter bring us some unprepared food and tell us to make the meal ourselves and see what we come up with.
