why does wanting to live make you a sociopath? spoilers.

I notice that gets thrown around here a lot. First off its an extreme situation, and your life is on the line. Being human is wanting to live, and that's great. Self sacrifice is amazing, so is compassion for others, but to consider that guy a sociopath cause he didn't want to die?

Also on a side note, I notice people saying the zap might be knocking them unconscious. The first lady who gets knocked out they show a close up of her face, and blood is coming out of her eye socket.

I 100% agree on this. I'd like to see these people in the same situation, if they sacrifice themselves in a heartbeat for some strangers during an extremely tense situation, call it another experiment.

reply

I would sacrifice myself for the kid but that's it

reply

That's another huge point, they were strangers. These were not friends pitted against each other. And again, in a normal everyday life that survivor could be actually a really good guy. He was just put in a situation that was fubar

Being willing to kill a child in order to live makes him a sociopath, or at least a very bad person who probably doesn't deserve to live.

Why? Children are annoying.

It's way easier to sit here and make that judgement when you're not put in the firing line. Would you want to kill yourself just because a kid could live? In a situation where you didn't even know the kid?

That's the thing, in any other situation would he kill a child? Then yes he'd be a sociopath. But this messed up game is the one doing the killing. They are just forced to play.

The sociopath part comes from how calm and nonchalant they are about voting to murder other human beings, not the wanting to live part.

Can't stop the signal.

It's, if the price for your living is the death of everyone else. the only reasonable choice is to leave to chance, no one's life is worth more than anyone else, age, sexe, race, believes, sexual tendencies... are all subjective to a certain values system, and saying the pregnant woman is more rational because the life of two is worth more than the life of one. according to what ? life isn't an arithmetical value to use mathematical logic to decide, is a million and one person worth more than a million person ?

reply

Choosing self preservation over compassion DOES make him less of a person than someone who does perform the self sacrifice.

But if everyone chooses self sacrifice, then they all die anyway. So isn't it actually better for at least one person to choose not to sacrifice themselves?

reply

Nope. Same principle as 'better to die free than exist as a slave'. Be true to your ideals or you are no better than a mindless animal.

Its not like only surviving when you vote and make choices who will be next. You can compare it with being on a liferaft after your ship has sunk. Being 10 but only have water and food for one. Who will go overboard and who will be the one getting the water. In both cases you probably a sociopath or will have survivor guilt extrem if you be the last one.
