guy who lived was super smart I respect him, obviously it was a bit of a d*ck movie to kill the kid but he was looking out for him self. And it worked out for him you know every man for himself good job

If you tell someone that committing suicide right now will save the life of some random person they don't even know, and they act like they'll be sitting there like "hell yeah sign me up, I'll commit suicide" ... give me a break.
It's not even a "dick move" because when you break down the options, there are 2: (1) kill someone else, (2) kill yourself. That's it. People who feel bad about wanting to live won't live very long.

I certainly wouldn't sacrifice myself for a faceless, random stranger, but it would be virtually impossible to kill a crying little girl who's terrified and is looking at me right in the eye.
It's sort of the same argument as to why the old people should go first. They've already had the opportunity to live their lives, while the younger have a good chunk of their lives ahead of them.
It would be silly to save the 100-year-old, only to have her die the next day. Someone younger would live longer and be able to accomplish more. The world probably needs years to recover from the alien experiment. Why save someone who'd only be able to work a day or a few years?
So, of course, the argument is that you save the youngest. They'll be able to have more of an impact on the world over the course of time.
Pregnant women are the best to save, because not only are they bringing someone who maximizes the time they'll have to live, they also bring adult wisdom to the mix, that a 6-yr-old could not. You can't just save kids and turn the planet into the Lord of the Flies. Moms will help a lot.

This is a very good point for saving the pregnant women. Aside from avoiding the die-next-day old person ans Lord of the Flies scenarios, it also doubles the number of people you save.
The only problem is that we have no idea about the plan of the aliens, that was just a speculation. If they plan to invade Earth, it's a better idea to save many strong adults who can fight. If they plan to reduce population and create a human reservation while recolonizing the planet, it's better to keep a well balanced population to preserve human society as well as possible. If they're just playing games and only using 10.000 people or less, none of this matters. Besides, if you die, none of this matters anyway - and you have a 98% chance of dying.

He was a douche, but he was in a douchebag situation to be fair. If I found myself in that situation, I simply would not partake, like the guy who kept completely silent and didn't say a word. I'd rather die like a man than live like a coward.
I'm not killing myself or killing anyone else, the 'aliens' / 'circle' is. I like to think I'm in that 5%, I saved someone from drowning once and the bastard almost drowned me! If I wasn't a strong swimmer, it could've gone bad.

As soon as he talked the little girl into sacrificing herself, I knew he was going to pull a quick one and vote for the pregnant lady at the last second to get them both eliminated. It was a great move on his part and he deserved to "win"
shareNah, nobody deserved anything that happened to them in the movie. It wasn't a game they signed up for, it wasn't a court of justice where people could be fairly evaluated, and the guy who survived was massively lucky that nobody saw through his agenda. Nobody is entitled to be alive more than anybody else - the prize is too enormous to evaluate your worth by it.
Someone could bring up the death penalty here, but that's a severely disputed and often rejected solution to terrible crimes - not to being less talented at manipulation and deceit.
He would have deserved to win a round of "Survivor", but that's an entirely different thing.

Here's one consideration:
For Eric's con to work, he had to be willing, at various stages, to put his own life on the line
He was careful to remain out of the limelight as much as possible, but when he had to step in, he did so
If humanity is to survive after being cut to 5% of its size, it'd probably stand a better chance with him than with most if not all of the other "players"
Plenty of people deserved what happened in the movie, just not those characters.
shareIdk how I feel about the guy that lived but I loved that he got away with it. He was very smart and had me fooled until he and the pregnant lady gave each other a signal to vote for the bearded blond. And he won by sheer manipulation and cunning.
