It's pretty clear that this movie takes place the same night the Blackwell Hotel thing happened, which was obviously placed in 2006.
But this one is set in 2014, made obvious by the technology and Twitter references.
Are we going to assume that the original also took place in 2014?

I would say 2006, but yeah, you're right...Twitter wasn't around in 2006 so I'm not sure why they had Katie's character say she found out through Twitter. MySpace was pretty popular back then, so they should've mentioned that or even Facebook to stay current.

There's nothing about the first movie that really keeps it in 2006, maybe apart from the phone that Zoe uses. I think we're supposed to assume that the first was also set in 2014, and I distinctly remember the Soskas mentioning it in an interview.
