If your mother didn't like the book because it glorified the super rich snobbish types then I don't understand why she didn't hate this movie. This movie does just that. That's the reason I couldn't stand it ! It absolutely put that whole attitude up on a pedestal, showing all of the different instances of the behavior - and really not putting it down at all, only EXPLAINING it. Even going as far as justifying it in some subtle ways.
This movie puts a thinly veiled promotion onto all of the individuals who basically live their life with a stick up their ass. Just look at how much of a positive light the Princess was put in. Oh, she's just a misunderstood lady who never has been approached by somebody properly. See how wonderful she is when Rachel approaches her (and of course kisses her ass) ? Forget about the way she acts every other day 24hrs a day. Forget about the fact that she's such a pretentious stuck-up bitch that she has to make sure nobody else sits in her row. She's only misunderstood.
And forget about the fact that stuck-up mom can't deal with her son's extremely successful intelligent girlfriend. She's only doing it because of "tradition" and the thought that family comes first. Ok, so basically she's a lady who gave up her ambitions to live the horrible life of a billionaire's wife, and live her life hosting parties in her $100 million dollar mansion. She didn't do it because of the glamour. She's only doing it because she believes in old Chinese tradition. The movie makes it look as though she was only doing it under that mindset. She's not doing it because she wanted to live the cush life of wealth. She's misunderstood by Rachel (and of course the viewers).
Absolutely despicable movie.
