Mahjong Scene
Wuz dat 2 show her dat poor ppl r better @ ze game?
shareI just saw the film. In my view, it was Rachel applying her game theory to the mother. The game was an analogy to the game she was playing with her mother-in-law-to-be. With her move, the mother would either accept her as she is, or reject her, but even if she fails it was worth the attempt.
shareI don’t think it’s dat deep. She wuz just showin off 2 da mum dat she has mad mahjong skillz so she wud be missin out in some weekend fun. Daz why ze mum changed her mind and gave her her ring. She knowz dat 1 nite, ring will be wager and she can win it back.

Rachel manipulated the game so that Eleanor would win but know that Rachel let her win. It was impressive.
At the very least a Ph.d economics professor who wrote the book on game theory who can do that in mahjong might be a nice addition to the family business.
Of course Rachel was too dense to know her boyfriend of a year came from wealth. Others knew who Nick Young was instantly in the coffee house.
