The horse story was not a big secret, we saw her telling it to some stranger she just met. So why she refused to tell it to her husband?

It was part of the one big story of life - He was teaching her that even though you want some thing obsessively, the thrill of the quest is over once you get it. After a while, you will just want something else. Plus you have to be tough enough to receive/accept disappointments. It was a shocking way to do it but we are not given his back story so it may have been mentally normal teaching to him, as in "life's tough, get a helmet". Cold blooded to others as if to say "I married your mother but hate your spolied/petted ways she has given you". So he just wanted to hurt her mentally so no bruised shown. We don't know what her mother did about the killing, the film wasn't long enough to fill it in.
This part of Caroline's one big story (her life) is a tabloid headline. By that I mean like "aliens landed on my lawn", "my toaster burned an image of Jesus on my bread" or "crazy warped step father kills horse in front of innocent child". We don't know what else happened in her childhood, but that may be why she was attracted to her husband Simon in the first place. Either way, the tabloid tie in theme links her to Porter.
So why she refused to tell it to her husband?
Because he was obsessed about wanting to know. He had done some bizarre things to her in his warped sense/version of love. That was her original attraction to him. The taping of everything was odd enough but he now felt that her love for him was now in jeopardy because of the sex challenge she had fulfilled. The horse story was simply something he did not yet know and not yet filmed. She was giving him the hard lesson in life that she had received as a child.

Did you miss the part where the stepfather was raping Caroline, his step-daughter? The step-father was a controlling manipulative ass****. He kept telling her he would buy the horse if Caroline kept the assaults from her mother. There's also dialog in the film stating the stepfather had all the power in the relationship with her mother.
The only "life lesson" he taught Caroline is some people are criminal, incestuous pedophiles who needlessly murder animals.
Not buying her the horse would be teaching a lesson about disappointment. This guy was just a horrible human being that psychologically scarred Caroline for life. share

Remember, her husband bought her the jade horse and was obsessed with knowing all the details of her horse story.
Did she consent to her stepfather?
That would still be statutory rape, not whatever any other kind of criminal rape charges are.
She did not consent, told her mom about his request, so he bought the horse and killed it in front of her, that is what I saw. Otherwise, I would have not gave my theory about his cruel life lesson to her when I replied to the OP.
