why do they need to go abroad again

I hope if the films series continues we can have the lads in their natural environment, the holidays are fun and all but id rather see them doing something different back home and have a few of the series characters in it more

if they do a third id hate for them to send the lads to the US or something and hope they steer clear of the whole wedding reunion storylines ive heard circulating.

Because the people writing the show go for obvious, mainstream-friendly formulas rather than clever, innovative ideas.

It takes a bit of thought to come up with a storyline based on a sitcom that justifies it being a feature film - that is, unless you take the lazy route and just slap them in a foreign setting.

it isn't a lazy route going on a lads holiday was perfect for the first film and in keeping with what those sort of characters would do, but for a second time I don't know why a holiday is needed

reply

It is a lazy route.

Practically every Britcom in the '70s made a movie and almost all of those were about the characters going on holiday to Spain.

It may well be in character, but any sitcom movie where the writers don't bother to think of a story beyond "The characters go abroad" is lazy.

It is true, that nearly every British sit com goes the holiday route when making a feature length.

The only exception that springs to mind so far is the 1998 Ted & Ralph TV movie, which I thought was not only as funny as the Fast Show short sketch, but also excellent witty writing and story telling. That alone proves it CAN be done, but like has already been mentioned creators generally tend to revert to mainstream for guaranteed higher ratings/box office.

all leading separate lives, meet up again

Me and myfriends went to uni but we hung out when we came homeand didnt n3ed to go abroad to do so

reply

You wouldn't hang out every day for 2 weeks or so, so the story would be based around one night, which is hard to do and been done to death as well.

reply

we would hang out a lot of those holidays, people don't stop hanging out when they go to uni, theres other choices then having the lads go abroad and even if it was set on one night why is that a bad thing superbad is set across one night and is a funny movie

reply

Also its been done, and you do see each other less. I have also been to uni and it happened to my group. Fact is when you grow up life changes, my male friends go on hols together a lot, especially for stag do's etc

If the film is set in the character's usual settings, it becomes nothing more than an extended episode.

reply

maybe if you have a *beep* imagination and if its funny and enjoyable who cares if it is an extended episode

reply

That's only true to an extent. Genuinely good writing can come up with ideas that maintain the usual setting but are big enough to justify the jump to a feature film. See South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa or Borat for examples.

Taking the characters abroad is a lazy way of making the film "big enough" to justify being more than a TV special without thinking of anything interesting for them to do.

That's what people do if you asked any group of lads in that age range what's the best part of their year they would say the lads holiday. Plus they're all in different universities so probably wouldn't see each other that often anyway I think the trailer actually says jays living in Australia.

I think a third movie in US would be a good idea many people would like to go to vegas or florida for spring break.

reply

i was thinking exactly the same thing. seems slightly lazy to try and repeat the formula from the first movie and go on holiday again. theyve done that they should have moved on. theres so many more adventures they could have. why not some kind of adventure at university? one of the lads is in trouble so the others come to bail him out. or they turn up and distract him before exams, im sure they could think up something.

or just all the lads returning from uni or wherever back to their home town and having a random week together while trying to figure out where to go with their lives. im sure second on the list was a wedding but maybe theyre saving that for the third movie lol. and of course third on the list would be one of them having a baby..

more of the same for more of the cash. they should have done some time travel sh!t or some psychedelic adventure where all they take mushrooms or dmt and spin off into an innerspace inhabited by machine elves and sexy alien like goddesses [which jay will say he`s already f#cked]

Even the marketing for the 2nd movie looks labored.

Lets make some more money before we are too old to play students ..Erm happened 2 years ago chaps and that's generous.
