More likely if Donovan was Gilberts nephew or something (or son if it could work).

Donovan's last name is ... Donovan, so I doubt he's Gilbert's son!

Nephew could work,if his mum was Gilbert's sister. Maybe that's why Gilbert let's him get away with stuff, like the bin on Will's head. Though I prefer it as Gilbert's just a tosser rather than a good uncle :p
