I just plain wish he wanted to cure cancer instead.
I just plain wish everyone of the very very brightest would voluntarily choose that curing cancer (or whatever other disease you'd like to cure) merited more attention than personal desires.
There are so many things that go into making us who we are, that in many ways we can only follow the thing that enchants our mind and rewards us and becomes an obsession, it's much harder, probably even impossible, to choose beforehand. Especially when so many of these deep psychological connections are formed when we're too young to know what would be a good thing to pursue.
Thus, if Tim had tried to do something else, in all likelihood, he wouldn't have gotten very far. He couldn't create the inner fire for something, he could only unleash the fire that happened to be inside him to do this particular thing.
He, and many humans don't choose to be patron saints of goodness. He obviously is more technical than humanistic in his thought patterns, he got rich and bought lots of expensive toys to play with he didn't open orphanages, and that's what you get.

His background in graphic design software is a better match for this hobby.
But don't worry. There are lots of intelligent, motivated and persistent people working on it.
