First trailer is out

A German trailer was released today and I'm seriously not happy AT ALL with it. If this thing is released on theatres Frears will damage his image for years, even though he has Florence after it.

I saw the German language trailer today too. Apparently, the film will be released in Germany in October. I wonder if there will be a series of trailers in every language except English.

reply

LOL they put the video private on YouTube, maybe they saw how bad it looked in German and will now release it in English. What an awful idea this was! But to be honest, almost 2 years after it wrapped, Frears had to do some extra shooting, no distributor in US...it sounds bad. Let's see if The Program will be selected in some big festival. Some bet Venice...

reply

It will be released in France in September - I'm surprised we didn't see a French trailer first. When it didn't premiere at Cannes, some of us wondered what was wrong with the film. I guess we won't know until the French version is in theaters.

reply

Yeah, it is backed by Studiocanal in Europe, so it will have a French, German and UK release. But only France's is announced. To be honest, it was very good that this film didn't premiere at Cannes and Frears did some reshooting. Critics can be very mean over there and they wouldn't have any problems in destroying this. Seeing the trailer it looks like a cheap movie made for TV and characters seem quite stereotyped. It kinda reminded me of Diana a bit: released on awards season but a big flop.

Let's see.

Hi AllGot,

I haven't seen a UK release date - It is supposed to be released in Sweden in late October so who knows when they will release it in the U.S. or G.B. I didn't think the trailer looked as bad as you seem to, although the actors' voices were dubbed which put me off a bit.

reply

They just say it will have a release later this year, for awards season. The only really confirmed date is in France, on September 23rd. It might have an October or November release in UK. In US I have no idea because there's no distributor.

reply

I saw it in English. What exactly is wrong with the trailer?

reply

I watched it in English too, WAAAAY better LOL I didn't like it because it looks like a movie made for TV. It seems like another Diana because it won't tell us anything new about the guy, roles are quite stereotyped (Canet seems ridiculous with that weird accent and performance) and it's based on a single POV. Armstrong's documentary seems more interesting and complete than this.

Frears having to reshoot after a year and no distributor interested in US aren't a good sign. The trailer just confirms that this is more an adaptation with a stellar cast, characters that look a lot like their real people and a poor script.

reply

Did Lance Armstrong have anything to do with any of this because even if there were reshoots, this movie has been on the shelf a long time. Is it only because it's not good?

reply

I don't know what happened but the president of Cannes said that it needed some reshoots so that's why it wasn't selected. If it needed reshoots ONE year after it wrapped production it's because good it isn't.

Besides, the movie was presented in many festivals markets in 2014 but no American distributor was interested. Why? Well, it's either really bad or it doesn't tell anything new to the audience so why buy it if people can watch a documentary on TV or any other article about it? I'm telling you, this smells like another Diana.

reply

You keep referring to Diana. Are you talking about the movie with Naomi Watts? I haven't seen that movie. What is the connection to this movie?

reply

hahahahaha it's an awful film that everybody put on their awards lists in 2013 but it flopped really bad. It was a movie about Diana's last days, before her car accident, but in the end it showed everything we already knew and it was quite superficial. The connection is this one: I have the impression that The Program won't show anything new about Armstrong and it might even show sides of him and other people related to him that might cause a lot of controversy. No wonder people haven't bought this yet.

reply

it might even show sides of him and other people related to him that might cause a lot of controversy.
If the film is going to create controversy, that's a good thing for a movie - right?

reply

It depends on what kind of controversy we are talking about. There are good ones and bad ones. Let's see when it premieres in a big festival, which will probaby happen in Venice or Toronto.

reply

Isn't any controversy good for a flick? ;)

reply

Depending on the subject, no. Like in this case.

Why are you comparing The Departed with this? LOL Did they reshoot ONE YEAR after they wrapped? Did they have NO distributor two years after the project was announced? I don't thin so.

Anyway, if you think it looks awesome, good for you. You go watch this apparently "crap" and tell us later if you liked it. But if you live in US you might have to wait a while...

I know re-shoots happen but not one year and a half after shooting wrapped and after NO US distributor was interested. This isn't a good sign, sorry. And the movie not having an US distributor with a name like Frears behind it and a stellar cast (except Canet) means something.

But I agree, let's wait and see. I just think they should avoid a major festival because if critics pan this film it will be a HUGE flop as it probably seems to be.

reply

The new trailer is brilliant. The film may be complete crap, but the trailer is one hell of an edit.

Really? I found it awful. Probably because characters look extremely stereotyped, especially Ferrari.
