i think this is a huge mistake that humans make. While im initially not against using steroids and other enhancers, what i dont like is how these circuits of drugs run through everything like a thin red line and continue to do so.
When kids look at their favorite athletes when growing up, none of them will be thinking: "Yeah! i will make my way to the top by using enhancers!" Their honest interest and drive can eventually get undermined when they get in the position to choose over enhancers - improving their chance to win, or stay natural - making it more likely to lose.
While Lance was not the first to use and/or get caught, the "Everyone cheats" mentality is just morally wrong, it reflects how this world runs nowadays, you cant get anywhere unless you lie, cheat and steal your way up, which in my opinion is detrimental to our overall respect for things in life.
Cheaters ARE everywhere, i can accept that, but i cant accept the condoning of the cheating.
Make a new branch of sports where enhancers are allowed, create some kind of "Superhuman League", let them go wild and we can watch the freaks perform. They want to cheat, then let them do it in their own right, but dont do it among the remaining honest athletes, over time it would force the honest ones to use more and more enhancers too because otherwise they might never win a title ever.
It might not be totally fair to single Lance out like this, since he was not the only one to use, but he was the one who won the most under these circumstances, making him the face of the era, so Lance still serves as a great example case and hopefully, at least in cycling, causes the cyclists to go clean for a while.
Lance IS a legend, but in the superhuman division, he still won while the others were using too, so he WAS good, but the sport was not created with this in mind, in fact, its against the rules...
Adjusting the rules would be like accepting painkillers in American Football, or plastic surgery for Beauty Pageants (maybe they already do, i dont know), but it would be wrong in my opinion, since the people that try to stay natural would fall behind on the new artificial standards.
But then again, writing this with a joint in my mouth and being a musician, the question could also count for music, are musicians better on or off drugs? Luckily we can bend the rules of Music :P
Yeah I've always thought we should have a "superhuman" league and then a "clean" league for sports...I think the issue is, one would become more prestigious than the other (probably clean) and people would flock towards that and still cheat, etc.
I'm also surprised we don't use performance enhancers more often in the military, emergency services etc.
But for people that train get in gym and compete they understand or at least know that drugs are everywhere.
Go stuff yourself you dont speak for us, ive been training for over a decade, and while its obvious that performance enhancing drugs are rife in bodybuilding there are many in the industry are against it...MANY. We consider it the same level as Lance Armstrong's cheating except that the IFBB is so corrupt, blinded, and not bothered to act that theres little that can be done. Its like trying to kill a retarded gorilla with a fly swatter.
Steroids and creating the ultimate human may have its place in military application where its life or death anyway. It does not have ANY place in sports that can be done and followed by kids from school level. It is completely unacceptable to subject the youth to this kind of ridiculous farce of "sportsmanship". Usage of steriods and similar drugs does not progress our race any further, in fact it pushes us backwards since its ultimately our genetics that hold the key to improving our species as a whole. Most abusers inevitably meet a fitting end, either being destroyed publicly, or suffering immense health issues later in life. While it might seem right to take satisfaction in this, its kinda sad since many are pushed into this by peer pressure and "norms" from idiots like yourself.
Anyone who has played sports at an elite level, especially football, knows that there is not a single player who hasn't used PEDs at some point in their lives (most of them throughout their entire careers). Of course steroid users are rampant in gyms as well, but the only reason their recreational use of these drugs is illegal is due to sports, since we didn't want non-using athletes to be a disadvantage. Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened and now no one can compete at a high level without PEDs.
Problem with Armstrong wasn't so much the doping but the continual denial and willingess to lie under oath. He tried to use lawsuits to silence people who spoke out against him and drove his accusers to either professional ruin or personal hell.
