Who cares anyway. 60% of the racers were no doubt on drugs. Just legalize it. And we will have something like Rocky IV, where that Russian Ivan Drago injected steroids.
Let the athletes with the best doctors and drug combinations/regimens win!!! That way it will be totally a fair race.
Because some people would like a chance to compete and win without there testicles shrinking, hair falling out, and in the case of females there voices not becoming a baritone. Plus some probably don't want to die of a heart attack in there early 30's either.
Do a quick search on all the young cyclists (or just athletes) that have died from doping.
And before you say "it was their choice", plenty of them, such as the former East German women's swim team, didn't even know they were being doped by their trainers and doctors who told them they were feeding and injecting them with vitamins.
Werner Franke, noted anti-doping physiologist one stated that Jan Ulrich (an arch rival of Lance) while not stupid, had a youthful child-like mindset. He mostly did what he was told, and never even bothered to ask what they were injecting him with or had a clue what drugs he may have been on, or what these drugs may have been. He just wanted to have fun and race his bike.
Joe Papp, who was not only popped for doping, but caught selling the junk, is definitely no simpleton if you've ever heard him speak or read his writing. He's talked about health issues he's had post-cycling he never saw coming.
Maybe I view things different than others, but I've always been of the opinion that if you cheated to win, you didn't really win. The whole point of competition is to prove who is the best. To say you cheated because everybody else did is just a lame excuse.
If you cheating you're creating a no win situation for the rest of the cyclists. You either join the party and cheat and in the process hinder your long term health or you compete at a competitive disadvantage. And the level of cheating totally blows away other sports with their cheating. As bad as PEDs were in baseball 10-15 years ago no one went to the extent of blood doping.
