Dramatize or document? What's best?
Now I've watched two documentaries on this subject but have not yet seen this film. It's a good time to address the topic of drama and document. I'm fascinated by the phenomenon of Lance and this public drama. I wasn't a fan or paid much attention to the events as they happen but took notice of the yellow wrist bands and Sunday morning coronations. So the story breaks, food for super cynicism,oh boy.
I recently watched LOVE AND MERCY and was glad I'd watched several Beach Boy documentaries before seeing the dramatization. If one accepts any fly on the wall drama is interpretive history I
think it's not good to see it without stronger familiarity with the facts. One runs the risk of internalizing the dramatic as the fact.
However the drama can be a deepening experience and factually instructive. Only with a good knowledge of the factual can the drama be appreciated. I've seen drama before document and recommend document first. It minimizes the nagging question and bolsters the pleasant recognitions.
With high profile films of Edith Piaf, Alan Turing,Stephen Hawkings, Coco Channel, et al. I fear the factual will suffer at the impact of their excellent (or less than) dramatically told stories.
There's nothing new here except we viewers have so many more fact based resources to draw upon. It's funny that with access to these resources I read less discussion of how dramatic license is used and more implemented yak about whether the movie works.
