Kickboxer is a legendary martial arts flick. It was made in the late 1980s and stars JCVD. The actors were real fighters and very believable in their roles, thus making the fights epic. Paul Hertzog's score and Stan Bush's songs are killer too. No fast cuts, no shakycam, no wirekwork, no CGI. That's what makes it so great.
The remake will be a total abomiantion. Same goes for the rumored Bloodsport remake.
The best way to remake this is to start all over fresh, its gotten too convoluted and too much time has elapsed.
You can give the original a nod by keeping the same character names.
And change things up a tad.
1. No kidnapping of brother, instead have Kurt written as an underdog fighting an uphill battle like Rocky in Rocky 4, ultimately winning though.
2. No raping his girlfriend. Maybe replace the rape with a different emotional trauma. Maybe she sneaks into the villain' gym and while he is sparring he makes eye contact with her, recognizing her as his enemy's girlfriend and he decides to decimate his sparring partner, beating him up so badly an ambulance has to come and take him away in a stretcher and he looks right at her and gives an evil smile that implies that Kurt will suffer a similar fate. The scene where she is crying because she was just kidnapped and raped in the original would be her crying because she is afraid for the man she loves.
3. Instead of the broken glass thing let it be a real Thai Kickboxing match in front of a huge audience and on tv so he can become famous with the whole world seeing him beat Tong Po.
4. Similar to what happened in the first Karate Kid and it's remake make Tong Po not quite as evil. Have him show good sportsmanship and congratulate Kurt in the end.
5. Maybe instead of it being a generic revenge story which is so done to death make it more of a drama. One idea I had was for Kurt to be honoring the memory of his brother rather than avenging him, there is a difference. Maybe instead of crippling Eric Tong Po just beats him up horribly and a few weeks later after getting out of the hospital Eric ends up getting crucified by the media, not for losing as nobody is invincible but for being way too over confident and assuming his western kickboxing could beat muay thai whan unlike Kurt later in the movie he made no effort to learn Muay Thai. Eric decides he will learn Muay Thai and get a rematch with Tong Po but in a scene similar to the one in Rocky V the doctors tell him that he cannot fight again for similar reasons, a brain injury. Eric is devastated that the doctors will not let him have another fight and descends into depression and self destructive behavior, ultimately ending in death from a drug overdose. Kurt's determination to beat Tong Po is a way of paying homage to his brother.
After beating Tong Po as a nod to the original Kurt gets the nickname (I cant pronounce it but it means "white warrior" in Thai) in the media and becomes famous. However, beating Tong Po took all of his stamina and he is very beaten up. Mylee insists he see a doctor just to make sure and after the exam he gets good news, unlike his brother the doctors just tell him to have no more professional fights for at least 2 months and no sparring for one month.
Unlike the original Kurt should do more sparring and have more professional fights before facing Tong Po. A series of victories as opposed to just one fight like in the original.
Batista is a real martial artists (no where near as accomplished as some of Van Damme's earlier opponents in his flicks) and Scott Adkins is straight-up beast! I'm definitely interested in this movie. If Tony Jaa is also involved this could be a seriously awesome movie!
shareAny chance of Iko Uwais or Yayan Ruhain (the Raid) joining too?
share"The remake will be a total abomination"
Until you watch the darn film you cannot stated that it'll suck!
He can states whatever he wants and you can disagree.

Suggestions?
well............after watching the film last night i can tell you this much...it did SUCK and sucked badly.the main character actor was appalling at acting and his martial arts skills weren't that great either. the whole cast except JCVD and Dave Bautista sucked at acting and overall ability and i have no idea why they cast that woman Gina Corano as she cant act to save her life she cheapens it even more and didnt throw a single punch. there is a few bits mostly with JCVD and DB that were ok but even JCVD was acting the fool and not trying and for some reason his voice was dubbed in places and not even done well he sounded awful.
overall the film bombed and is nothing like the original, you don,t care one ounce of *beep* for any of the characters if they dropped dead you really couldn't care.there is no character building and the 2 Sloan brothers have no chemistry and Tong Po just wasn't menacing enough..its just a mess really.
its a shame as i so wanted to like this film but found it cheesy and poorly acted and just a bore-fest and to not make Adkins the head role was its biggest downfall, the guy playing Kurt just isn't strong enough an actor and has the screen presence of a fart in a jar.
id say it deserves 3/10 and that,s being generous...poorly acted crap-fest..a real shame
Good Lord, please don't remake this. One of the best martial arts movies ever!
Nok soo kow!
Screw you Hollywood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
shareIts not a remake, its an excuse to make a badass movie. The only thing that will be the same will be the names. You still have the original if this one sucks. Even if the acting is horrible you will still get some amazing action sequences. This director is incredible. If you have doubts go watch Tai Chi Zero and Tai Chi Hero. I hope they make Tong Po the most evil son of a bltch on earth and have more fighting and action outside of the ring/training. Maybe Van damme's character gets kidnapped after he beats Tong Po and he has to escape and fight his way out, killing everyone.
shareBatista has a lot of experience with wrestling, he can make dangerous moves without hurting people, this kind of movie is perfect for him
shareThat's the spirit!
shareHahah right on where is Scott Adkins in the lead? This is just awful who even cares about the new scenario about is brother being killed instead of being handicapped.
That is another crappiest that i will skip pretty much like karate kid 2010 like they could get the same chemistry that Daniel San and Mister Myagi had back then.
Awful craprest in deed.
I didn't even watch the new Karate Kid. I loved that movie when I was kid and even the sequels were pretty good. Well, at least the second one was. Still, Jackie Chan is way better than Pat Morita, especially when it comes to real martial arts. Of course having a Chinese Kung Fu practitioner play a Japanese Karate Master is kind of messed up. Then again, I don't see 1 real Asian in this new Van Damme remake of Kickboxer. By the way, it Mr. Miyagi, not Mister Myagi. "Bansai Daniel San, Bansai"!
shareEspecially as JCVD's character was killed off in Kickboxer 2.
shareHahaha yeah its just that awful. So stupid. Not sure what the hell they are remaking this
shareBecause the winner gets a ticket to go to the International Space Station and gets to fight an astronaut/kosmonaut in 0 gravity!
Kickboxer 2: Kickfloater
...it's sad, but you can't make them stop doing *beep* like this.
