There is a lot I would have done different .SPOILER WARNING.

I feel there are too many elements in the movie. Too many to even explore. Personally; I feel the more simple the story could have been, the better it would have been. But this is my opinion and I'm going to share my thoughts.

The sword play I would have taken out completely. I didn't like the idea that hand to hand combatants need weapons (like this at least) to make a fight better.

Things seemed a little out of place; Kavi suddenly leaving Po's camp and then just joining up with Durand's camp, seemed weak to me. There is ways I personally would have explored this with a conclusion. Like show Po being disgusted with Kavi and kicking him out. Later show him training (building bonds) with Kurt and Durand. Later; Kavi feels like he can take Po at his camp and gets badly beaten. This, would then tie in with Kurt going to the camp and challenging Po. Again, this is my personal opinion on how I would do things differently in this part.

Show Po's evil side; Maybe during the final fight, Po should have expressed how he enjoys the kill after battle and that Eric was a weak fighter (after saying earlier that he was a warrior in an attempt to hide his true nature?). I would have showcased the character in battle more too with the Kavi beat down I said in my last paragraph. Just something to spice up the character in my opinion.

Bar fight; Durand take Kurt to a bar to fight. I know it has to be different from the original, but to make Kurt look very weak in this scene, kind of took the sting out of all the training he has been doing. Not only that, but to get saved by Durand? How would I have done it? Well... Show Kurt getting out-powered but using his speed to overcome the power problem. Making Cain's character get even more wild in attacks to then be exposed and then "beaten". Then add Kurt going over to the Joe King, taking the money and with a smile, saying; "Thanks", before both walking out with held-back excitement.

Attempted kidnap; I feel this scene was thrown in for action value and not to aid the story. From this point in the movie, I would have changed the whole complication of the story altogether. How?; Have her kidnapped. Kurt being told by one of the beaten thugs; "If you want her back in one piece, you'll have to win... hahaha..." (kick to face KO). Now this gives Kurt a more burning reason to beat Po. To save her life. Also, the placing of the scene I just made, would be placed some point after challenging Po. There are other details but I don't want to keep you ;)

Mercia's character could have played her part my made up kidnap plot. As Po doesn't want to beat up the kidnapped Liu trying to escape, Marcia is there to wipe the floor with Liu. Just adding to the story to bring out more in the character.

The final fight; Again, I would have taken out the sword play. It just didn't fit the movie for me and was against this pure fight contest. If I had to add weapons to the story, I'd have chosen fighting sticks. This way, you can show more connecting attacks with the weapons to beat up the opponent some more, rather than waiting for that slice n dice with the swords that are made to kill.

Conclusion to the fight; Personally, a more fitting end would have been for Kurt to snap the neck of Po in the same way he killed his brother. In this moment just before he does, Kurt would say; "This is for my brother..." (neck snap...Fatality). Then, show Kurt drop to his knees looking up while a faded montage is shown of him and his bother having a laugh, play fighting, hugging, brotherly stuff. But I didn't feel like Kurt's character showed enough vengeance in this story and turned out to be a selfish motive rather than vengeance for the death of his brother. This is just how I saw it. You might see things differently.

So in all. On a personal level, I feel this movie could have been done differently. But... I did enjoy it and can't wait for the sequel(s). These are just my opinions mixed with my ideas so I hope I don't rub people up the wrong way (too not get jumping split kicked anyway).

Agreed. Remove all sword fighting.

I suspect Kavi showing up later and becoming a good guy was because it was St. Pierre playing the character. I would've been fine with him not coming back into the story at all. But I always liked St. Pierre back when I watched UFC so it was nice that his character came back into the story and started the White Warrior chant in the final fight.

Tong Po was already shown as an evil character. He killed Eric Sloan for no reason. Tong Po enjoys killing. That annoying guy said half of the deaths in "the ring" from the past two years were from Tong Po.

Bar Fight: Realistically, it makes sense for Kurt Sloan to lose his first fight. All the training scenes show us is that he became very or extremely physically fit but how does that make you a good fighter? You have to actually fight strong opponents to become better. I think the main reason Kurt lost was because they wanted us Van Damme fans to see Van Damme kick some ass.

The Kidnapping was stupid. None of them had guns or knives. They just wanted to give us another action scene.

Final Fight: Kurt wasn't really a killer. He couldn't shoot Tong Po and he couldn't kill Tong Po with is bare hands either. He only killed Tong Po because he had to.
