Watched the movie today
meh. IMO, not as bad as some suggest, but not a good movie either. First, the good. I thought Sean Astin was solid in his small role and he did a good job channeling Dennis Hopper in the scene that was a not-so-subtle homage to True Romance. So, spoiler, Sean Astin gets shot in the face.
The bad, Ke Huy Quan was miscast as the lead. It is an action movie, but unlike Jackie Chan in his prime, Quan is no action star. He moves like a martial artist, but he is so small. In Scenes with Mustafa Shakur or Andre Ericksen, Quan looked like the kid from Temple of Doom, not John Wick, or even Jackie Chan (who isn't that tall either). Even his love interest (Ariana Dubose) was taller than him, and action stars should never have to tilt their head back to kiss a woman.
Also, IMO, the attempts at humor fell flat. A few truly funny scenes can lift an otherwise unwatchable movie to watchable, but I didn't even chuckle once. Maybe the humor in this film appeals to others, but not me.
So, my suggestion, wait for it to come out on streaming.
