Will Adonis move up to heavyweight?

It seems to me that Adonis moving up to heavyweight at some point in a sequel would be in order. Light-heavyweight just doesn't quite carry the same "weight" (pardon the pun) that heavyweight does.

No, he is NOT as big as his father. Compare him to Carl Weathers. He would have to move up TWO weight divisions since Cruiserweight is between light heavyweight and heavyweight. Its too much of a stretch.

I'm sure Jordan could beef up to look bigger. And look at Stallone in Rocky III, supposedly fighting at "heavyweight" but probably only weighing 160 in real life.

reply

True no way Stallone was a heavyweight but I think if the writers of the movie wanted him to be a heavyweight it would have been written that way and it wasn't. I think they are trying to show differences between him and his father. His personality is different and other than being black they don't look much alike. I think making him a different weight class was done on purpose.

In real life Michael B. Jordan would be too small to fight at heavyweight. But since it's the movies anything is possible. Stallone weighed more like a middleweight for Rocky III at 160lbs and light heavyweight for Rocky IV at 180lbs.

Ryan Coogler said he did have some ideas for two Creed sequels. Maybe if it's a trilogy Adonis can fight for the heavyweight title in the third film. Have a scenario where he's become a dominant light heavyweight champion pretty much cleaning the division out and then a promoter tries to set up a mega fight with the heavyweight champ.

reply

Well the Rocky movies always had that 'it's an exhibition fight' or 'it's an unsanctionned fight'. I'm sure they can come up with some reason why he would fight a heavyweight, making him more the underdog.

reply

it would be less of a stretch for him to move up to CRUISERWEIGHT but for some reason Cruiserweight is a very unpopular weight division, i am not sure why.

reply

The lack of popularity of the cruiserweight division may have something to do with the fact it was only officially started in 1979 and doesn't have as long a history.

I have a theory that because its only ONE weight division below the much more money and glory intensive HEAVY WEIGHT anyone near the top of the Cruiserweight range like EVANDER HOLYFIELD does major bodybuilding to get a little heavier so they can be heavyweight and make more money and anyone at the bottom end of that weight range slims down so they can get slightly lighter so that they can be in the next weight down (light heavyweight), that way they will be the biggest in their weight class and have a slight advantage over the other light heavyweights.

That would mean all that would remain would be whoever is right in the middle of that weight division and would have trouble moving their weight either up or down, or a few that are afraid to be barely over 200lbs and be smaller than the other heavyweights.

I had this same thought some months ago. I like the idea. I think he should become a Heavyweight and win the title his father once held.

There is a Cruiserweight division inbetween Heavyweight and Light Heavywight. I think if he goes up it should be at CW first.

reply

Let alone the fact that the Heavyweight division is one of the lowest drawings divisions in boxing these days. Mayweather, Pacquaio, De La Hoya, Hatton and so on were the top drawing boxers of the last several years and they all fight in the 140's and 150's.

There's also the consideration that one of the biggest fights of the year in 2016 (Kovalev/Ward) was at light-heavyweight... so it's possible Adonis would stay at that weight, given that weight has seen a lot more credibility lately in the "real" world. He could also conceivably decide that the best fighters in the world are in the middleweight division and set his sights there. Sort of like Matthew Modine in Vision Quest - he went from heavyweight wrestler to middleweight because that was where the best competition was.
