If Cory had lived, do you think Carrie would have lived too? I know her twin's death killed her in a way, but if Cory was still there for her, do you think she would have gotten so depressed about Corrine angrily rejecting her on the street that she would not have killed herself?

I know how Cathy moved back up to VA near Foxworth Hall to be near Bart to start her seduction/revenge on her mom, but if I were her would have considered Carrie and I wouldn't have wanted what to happen to happen. I remember she wanted to stay with Paul but Cathy made her go with her to VA saying Paul needed a wife.

I think that Carrie would have been able to survive longer with Cory. It was like she died the day he died.

reply

^this. I agree.

Remember another catalyst for Carrie's suicide was finding out her fiance was going to be a clergyman. That, combined with Corrine's rejection was really what did it IMO. However I think that if she'd had Cory for support she might no have felt so hopeless.

I don't think Cory and Carrie every really developed separate identities. They were really just babies when they went into the attic. If they'd had a normal childhood they might have developed separate interests and made other friends. They might always have been close but that sense of combined identity might not exist. As it was they were seen as a unit: "the twins". When Cory died, Carrie essentially lost half of herself. I don't think she ever felt complete again.

If she'd not been rejected so brutally by Corinne, if things with Alex were slightly different, would she still have done it? I don't know. She might have lasted longer, but done it when some other catalyst presented itself.

She believed what the grandmother said about them being the devil's spawn/devil's issue, so that was a contributing factor. I remember reading the book and wanting her to believe Cathy when she was trying to convince her she wasn't, and mentioned that Egyptians did the same thing.

reply

But I wonder if those factors didn't exist: if she hadn't run into Corrine, didn't believe the devil's spawn thing, and wasn't afraid to marry Alex, if things were going well in her life; would she have been able to live without Cory? Or would she still always have felt incomplete and eventually killed herself anyway?

I think if Cory had lived, Carrie would have too. I don't think she would have ever intentionally left him.

I do think that even if Corrine hadn't rejected her that day on the street and she had married Alex that she would have always been waiting for something to push her over the edge so she could be with Cory again. She felt incomplete and lost without him. I don't think anything would have ever filled that void enough for her to live happily.

Yes, I don't think Carrie would have killed herself if Cory was around to care about her.

Cory and Carrie had a similar bond to that of Chris & Cathy because of the attic experience. Theirs is a more pure version though since it is without the incest angle.

Had Cory lived, the difficulties of growing up with her "disfigurement" would have been made more bearable with Cory around to sympathize and share the experience with her.

She wouldn't have felt so alone and always like a 2nd class citizen compared to others (esp Cathy). Perhaps Corrinne's rejection would not have wounded her as deeply. It would hurt, but she still had Cory around to let her know there was someone in the world who *truly* cared about her no matter what.

BTW, I thought it was tacky of Cathy to take Carrie along in Virginia when she carried out her revenge plans. Carrie wanted to stay with Paul, but Cathy had to take her just so she can have a personal housemaid and nanny. Annoying Cathy.

reply

ITA! She should have let her stay with Paul. She knew how fragile Carrie was and should have given her what she wanted. I wouldn't want my little sister who went through so much pain (plus what the redhead Sissy Towers done to her) near my mother who tried to kill me and my siblings for the love of money.

Weren't Chris and Cathy twins also? It's been at least 30 years since I've read the books, but I have a vague recollection of the family being composed of two sets of fraternal, mixed-gender twins.

reply

No, Chris was about 2 years older than Cathy. The next set of twins I believe were adult Jory's and Melodie's kids in the 4th book.

Cathy was as selfish and Vain as Corrine in so many ways. This is one example. Taking Carrie was more about her not staying with Paul, plus needing her to watch Jory while she carried out her Revenge.

Carrie says "Paul needs a Husband, if you won't have him, I WILL MARRY HIM." That was unacceptable to the Vain Ms Cathy. It was only one of the factors but nonetheless there.

Cory living would truly have saved Carrie from Many MANY things. Paul would not have sent her to that school, he would have allowed the twins to go to public school TOGETHER, so no Sissy Towers nightmare.

Cory would have been around to protect Carrie from Julian's disgusting sexual molestations, I doubt she'd have bothered if he had been there.

Somehow I see young CORY becoming religious had he lived, it's just something about his personality. Perhaps if that were so, she may have learned that God loves them, and when she met her true love, she might have not feared the whole minister thing.

OR they might have gone the Chris and Cathy route, this was also possible.

Either way, Yes, Carrie surely would have survived longer.

Would have been cool to have Cory be a successful Rock star..
