Did The Novel Have The Butler Character?

I recently watched the 1987 film and unlike the 2014 version where the grandmother wants nobody to know about the kids, there was a butler who helped the grandmother supervise the kids in that film.

Was the butler from the novel or was he just made up for the 1987 film?

John Amos (the butler) was in the book, but he never came into contact with the children. However, it's hinted in that book and confirmed in a later book that he knew they were there.

The Butler ends up playing a large role in If There Be Thorns (the third book in the series.)
