The mother and the ring

Did anyone notice the look on Corinne's face when the grandmother asks about the ring Cathy is wearing, then tells her to take it off. To me, she almost looked amused. Do you think it was because it angered the grandmother, or she liked seeing it taken from her daughter?

reply

I didn't notice Corinne's reaction to Cathy being forced to hand over the ring to the grandmother, but I can imagine that Corinne might be happy to see that. I sensed some tension between Corinne and Cathy earlier and I think Corinne is shallow enough to be a bit jealous about Cathy receiving a special gift from her dad.

I also noticed that the second time I watched it Cathy found the ring in the mothers safe. We know she's a biatch but that was just nasty.

The fact Cathy found it in her mother's safe was enough to make me think Corrine was happy the ring was being taken away. Why else wouldn't Olivia put it in another safe in the house?

But how did Corrine get hold of it? It's not like Olivia took it from Cathy and then gave it to her as soon as they were out of the room. She hated Corrine and knew she would give it back to Cathy and tell her to hide it. So when did she get it and why didn't she give it back?

reply

I honestly think Corrine knew before they arrived at Foxworth Hall that she would have to keep the children locked up until her father's passing. So maybe Olivia and Corrine had already allied up - either that or I think they would have by the time Corrine found out about the will, which was likely from Bart before her father's death.

Honestly I got the vibe in the early parts of the book that Corrine was actually jealous of Cathy...especially of the special attention she got from Christopher Sr. Corrine needed to be the center of attention at all times and gets clearly frustrated when people don't basically fall to kiss her feet - this is made clearly obvious in several parts of the book.

If you had read Garden of Shadows then you would understand what was really going on. Corrine did know that the kids would be locked up till the grandfather died but she wasn't in cahoots with Olivia. She did think she could get back into the will though. Time, money and the parents views changed her mind and led to the doughnuts.
She didn't get the ring back in the book though. It's another of the things they put in the film with no explanation.

Cathy didn't get a ring from her father in the book. It was a music box. Nice try.

reply

I quote..... I couldn't take the sterling silver music box with the pink ballerina inside. The music box was expensive and had been listed as something of value for 'them' to claim. I couldn't take down the shadowboxes from the walls, or hide away the miniature dolls. There was hardly anything I could take that daddy had given me except the small ring on my finger, with a semi precious stone shaped like a heart.

Don't try and make someone look stupid without checking facts first please.

A bit later in the book FitA, Cathy mentions wearing that ring on a chain around her neck since it no longer fits on her finger.

reply

I may be wrong, and I don't have time to check, but wasn't that Carrie's ring in POTW?

reply

Even if I'm wrong on the ring, the grandmother never took it in the book - this was only added in the movie.

Yes I know. I said that.
