Why did she freak out on the stairway and panic when they turned the light off there? Why did the scene seem significant? Was there a previous scene about her and her fear of stairs?

I think there was a mention of claustrophobia in there somewhere.

Yes, Corrine mentions that her mother is claustrophobic and that she would never get in the attic, when she brings paint and paintbrushes to the children to make a fake garden...
