I'm too scared to watch this.

I love the first book, enjoyed the series, and especially the last book (the epilogue). I read them a few years ago. I am currently listening to the audio books because I have nothing better to do at work.

Oh yeah incest bla bla bla. I don't see the series as being solely about incest, more a terrible tale that includes it, but it definitely isn't one of the main issues for me (child abuse and poor Cory breaks my heart). Now that we are past that.

I choose several years ago not to watch the older movie after finishing the book. I saw the bad reviews and couldn't do it. Recently I saw this movie had come out, and was so excited. Then I read some reviews and comments on the boards and I just can't do it. I can't ruin the whole book by watching a *beep* movie. I'm angry just reading about the bad acting. I'm scared that this will ruin the characters for me. I'm scared that I will be so outraged after watching, at *beep* rich people being so lazy that they can't write a proper script or hire proper actors and that I can't do a single thing about it. (I usually avoid hollywood crap to avoid being outraged, I understand these guys might have had a lower budget but no excuse not to find good actors).

What do others recommend that have watched this movie, and that have read the books? Did you wish you hadn't watched it, or glad you did?

I don't expect a gem when I watch a movie based off a book. Sometimes a simple reenactment (missing the depth of the book of course) is fine by me, for example Clan of the Cave Bear or Salem's Lot, I was pleased enough with.

Thanks!

I consider myself a die-hard fan of the FitA seties. It's my favourite story. Always has been. Always will. FitA was the first novel I ever read at high school, and I hope that it will be the last I read when I'm old and grey. That's how much I love the Dollanganger saga. I've seen the 1987 version of the film, the 2014 version of the film, had the 10-cassette audio version and even been exposed to the dire wannabe-parody; Flowers up her Attic.

And you know what...nothing has altered the way I feel about FitA. Nothing at all. I don't regret having seen either of the screen versions of FitA. I think it depends on who you are as a person, as to whether you will allow a filmed version to affect your love of the story? Personally, my passion in life is musical theatre...so I have to endure this a far amount. Every time they decide to try and transfer one of my favourite musicals to the screen...I find myself saying, will this destroy what I already love? But you know what...I don't allow it. No one can take away what you feel for an original source.

I say you should watch the 2014 version (and the 1987 version!) with an open heart. Believe it or not, but there are actually aspects to like (and yes, dislike) about both versions. But then...I suppose I've always been one of those people who try and find redeeming qualities in all and everything! Lol. If you watch either of them and hate both, then that's fine. You still shouldn't allow this to influence how you feel about the original story. But as long as you remember that neither is 100% faithful to the original novel (and don't expect masterpieces!), then you'll be fine!

I read the series too, as a young adult. I loved it. At the time I thought it was the best thing ever written! I can honestly say, watch this Lifetime version. It doesn't insult the book. The 80's film insulted the book by changing the story. But I do advise you to avoid "Petals On the Wind," because the writers took unbelievable liberties with the source material. they basically re-wrote the entire book, omitting important characters while inventing completely new, insipid characters. That movie made me a bit angry..but "Flowers" is a decent watch..
