I read that Virginia Andrews had to

'spice' up her original manuscript.
Now, whether she had the main shocker plot line all the time, I don't know.
Either way, I think that what she wrote about is not unusual at all, it just isn't talked about.
Also when she wrote the story, even parent-child incest was barely talked about.
I find it funny how easily shocked people are by her stories.

I think the first film was a total let down and quite embarrassing.
This version did its best to show how twisted things got BECAUSE of the circumstances the characters were in.
Sure , if all the details were kept in , it would have been a real treat for the fans..but there you go...better get back to the books :)

Which topic are we talking about there? Incest or child abuse?

Since if it's incest, there are many different lines because some cultures rule differently on how far blood should be a part and if adoption or marriage are taboo too.

Some other works that tackled this of course include Blue Lagoon (Dicky and Emmeline are cousins), Frankenstein (Victor and Elizabeth are adopted siblings), The Fall of the House of Usher (Roderick and Madeline are twin siblings), The Beauty and the Beast: Original Version (Beauty and Beast are cousins), and then there's Wuthering Heights.

That's about all that I can think of that pre-date Flowers in the Attic off the top of my head.
