Ignore The Haters

I'm not even the kind of person who usually enjoys "turn your brain off" movies, but I really enjoyed Hardcore Henry. It's probably the best videogame movie that's ever been made and it's not even based on a videogame.

Yes, it has a thin plot. No, it's not for the squeamish or those who get motion sick easily. But if you're the kind of person who can enjoy a 90 minute non-stop action extravaganza, few movies will deliver like this one does.

On top of that, by seeing this film in the theater you'll be supporting a young director who got his start making video shorts on YouTube and Vimeo. I went and saw it on that merit alone, and I'm glad I did. At the very least, it's something original and it shows that we don't have to rely on big studios to decide what's playing in our theaters.

I'm rather surprised the audience doesn't like it because they're usually into movies that don't require the ability to think but I can definitely understand the critics seeing how they are seemingly oblivious to the painfully obvious line that divides popcorn entertainment and art

There's absolutely no accounting for taste.

I think that there is a divide between people who have their own taste (acquired by lots of experience, watching tons of other movies etc.) and people who have to be told what to like and what not.

That's one reason, why stars are so popular (the other reason is their sexual appeal to the common people).

Why else do you think that advertising still works? We all know when it's an ad and we all know that it's full of lies and deception. So why are they everywhere, why is there so much money spent in making them and why does it still work?

There are still a lot of people who are prone to them, either because they don't have the experience to figure it out (like kids) or because they have never learned to (maybe ignorant?).

Anyways, I think that most people are still part of the 'ignorant' crowd, and therefore would not understand the genius originality of groundbreaking movies, if they are not told to.

I also suspect that only very few people ever heard about HH, because there isn't a lot of PR for it. Maybe it also suffers of the Ghibli-movies-published-by-Disney-effect.

I totally agree with you on everything.

Even though I don't think that the plot was too thin. It's just right for this movie and it's awesome!

Go see Hardcore Henry, it's amazingly awesome!

reply

Yes, ignore the Haters, and ignore this movie. Instead you should see The Boss, the greatest film of our generation. It's still running at my local cinema, and crowds of grateful fans have been seen weeping with joy. It will obviously sweep the Oscars next year.

I've seen it 17 times, and it gets better every time. I give it an A++, and if the late, great Roger Ebert were still alive I'm confidant that he would give it seven stars.

So forget HH, and RUN, do not walk, to see The Boss, a cinematic masterpiece!

I LOVE "turn your brain off" movies so this film was borderline perfect to me.

I'm willing to bet that some of the people that hated this are some of the same people that complain about Hollywood's lack of originality, and yet when given an original movie they shat on it.

CortneyAkana speaking as one of those who really didn´t like it, I can tell you that´s not why I don`t. Before you get your guard, up let me say I recognize what they did in terms of action and stunts. Specially the stunts/camera work were incredible, and with only 2M budget? Even more impressive. But the thing is that´s as far as it got for me. I love brain-off movies too. Donnie Yen, Jackie Chan, John Woo, all the 80s action packed flicks, from Cobra to Snake. Give me cheesy action too, like Kung Fury, I like it all. But this had no story to get me interested, no characters (terrible acting), no world to get sucked into. That´s what I think this lacked. A lot.

It`s funny that you mention originality, because that`s what I thought this film had at first, and completely lost it as it went on. It had a crazy action packed world to develop, and it keep repeating the same things over and over, until it ate and vomited itself in the end. It could have been the action Blair Witch Project, but it was a gimmick. The YT videos were amazing, but they`re not enough for 90min. The bad guys were generic, the overall plot was standard, the action scenarios we`ve seen a million times in FPS, the motivations of the characters and the exposition was... meh. What you call original here I think is the techniques, but that´s not enough to make a good movie.

I hope you get what I`m saying here. Totally respect that you like it, but I hope you can get my point too.

I get what you're saying and respect your opinion. And let me just say thank you for being civil about getting your point across, that's something that is in real short supply as of late on the internet.

I give it points for being a little smoother than the standard shaky hand-cam. It's POV so it's apt to be a little erratic, but compared to most "regular" action movies where it looks like the two guys in the fight are beating up the cameraman I'd say this movie did it right.
