Interesting FPS POV gimmick ruined by a terrible plot

I found the POV gimmick very interesting and consider it as groundbreaking as the bullet time used in The Matrix, but this movie's plot was just terrible. I understand that this movie isn't to be seen for the story, but there were some irregularities that ruined it for me.

Can someone explain to me what the motivation was for Akan and his girlfriend to do what they did to Henry? From what I understood, they wanted the memory of Henry waking up saving his wife from Akan and escaping the lab. This memory was supposed to be implanted into new cyborg soldiers. How does this help Akan to control them if they learn to hate him on conception?

Second, no explanation of Akan's telekenetic powers is given or even hinted at. Someone in another thread said that it's explained in the comics this movie is based on. Why didn't the writer/director put any of this into the movie?

Finally, did Jimmy find Henry randomly upon his falling from the sky? If so, that's incredibly silly. Maybe more is explained in the comics, but was left out of the movie as well.

I like this movie and gave it a 6/10, but I wish I could like it more.

When the soldiers woke up and had that memory of their wife being kidnapped by Akan, the wouldn't have listened to akan. Akan would have got them to do what he wanted by their wife telling them what to do

The POV isn't groundbreaking as it has been done before at least as far back as "Dark Passage" (1947) (at least as far as I am aware) where Humphrey Bogart plays an escaped prisoner on the run. A more recent movie that uses it was "Doom" (2005). POV has been used often in thriller and horror movies for example "Psycho" (1960) and "Halloween" (1979) usually showing the killer stalking their prey from their point of view. I just wanted to point out that POV has been used before and isn't really groundbreaking.

I think he means as being done for the entire movie, not just a few scenes. Still though, it's been done before: the Maniac remake did it in 2012, the action horror flick Hotel Inferno did it in 2013, and those might not be the first.

I haven't seen the movie, but if you're talking about POV through the entire film its been done the same year 1947 in Lady in the Lake.

If you're searching for a groundbreaking plot, wrong flick. It suited the movie fine. Every second of this movie is an homage to video games, so sorry if that all went over your head.

"I thought about what you said to me the other day, about my painting..."

reply

Its not a homage to video games. The director made a POV music video for his punk band, thats how he got the idea to make a full length movie in POV. Video games had nothing to do with the movie's creation whatsoever.

Samuel L Jackson and Steven Spielberg both praised his work on the POV music video, they even posted on twitter. The movie is shot exactly in the same way.

Okay, the creation maybe, but you're blind if you can't pickup on how it's an ode to video games.

-Sniper mission
-Protection mission
-The first time Jimmy approaches Henry is straight out of a video games
-All the scenes are essentially "missions," and when they're over they're checkpoints
-Telepathic final boss, hopping on corpses to reach him

I could go on and on. Whether you like to admit it or not this movie is paying homage to video games.

"I thought about what you said to me the other day, about my painting..."

Also the whole intro was like a tutorial/ character creation scene!!

This film is OBVIOUSLY one big long love letter to gaming. ANY GAMER can see this.

I havent seen Maniac remake, so i guess ill have to see it before judging, but Hotel Inferno is a movie everyone wished they didnt see. It may have been one of the first to do this, but lets just agree that this movie does not exist for the sake of our sanity.

That's odd. I thought it was an interesting story ruined by a POV gimmick. I stopped watching after 20 mins.
