Frozen Face

Once an actor's face has been frozen with botox it makes it very hard to take them seriously anymore. I certainly can't take them seriously in a period pic. It's why I struggle to take Nicole Kidman seriously in a film. I've seen Kate in a few films recently and it's very hard for her to convey a range of emotions due to the fact that her forehead barely moves. I just think that it's dishonest to your craft. Ultimately I think women should do whatever they want with their bodies, but when you're an actor if you do something that affects your performance ability people will notice. It's sad because I always found her so charming and likeable.

Your comments sound spot on. I feel sickened whenever I see marvelous actresses who were once beautiful turning to surgery and botox. Those things truly render them unwatchable. Many of them become freakish.

I wonder if, had you not known of the treatments beforehand, you would have noticed. This is the first I heard of it, and it made no difference to me. I couldn't take my eyes off her.

I don't know what photos of Kate you've been looking at, but in my eyes, she looks completely different than she used to.

Here are a couple of stories with "before" and "after" pictures:

She has most definitely changed over the years.

I honestly don't think that she looks that different than she used to aside from better hair and makeup, but she definitely can't move her forehead anymore. Like I said, I don't think there is anything wrong with cosmetic procedures, but if they get in the way of your performance ability then you're doing yourself a disservice. The last time I saw Kate in a film it was very distracting that she could no longer emote.

reply

I have not seen the movie yet but I saw her on two late night talk shows promoting this movie. While watching I thought Kate has never looked better.

reply

She looks good. I've never said that's the problem. In fact I think she looks magnificent. She just can't move her face like she could before so it makes her performances seem flat, at least the ones I've seen in the last few years.

At least Kate is recognizable. Renee Zellweger is unrecognizable, and what a shame.

Renee is still very recognizable, but most people are very simple in the deductions. Renee, if anything, actually looks old. She still has full mobility of her muscles in her face and has only had one thing done from what I can tell. She had her eyelids done, which was probably necessary as her eyes were already so slim and she was started to gain extra skin on top of them due to aging. She's much thinner and older than she was when she was 10 years ago and she left the spotlight for quite some time. That changes a face.

reply

I also came here just to say I didn't feel any emotion from Kate Beckinsale in this movie at all... Her face hardly moved, and it was a crying shame since this movie was supposed to be a comedy!

reply

I agree with you about Nicole Kidman. Hard to watch her now. I didn't notice this with Kate, she is lovely. As for the "frozen" expression, it actually enhanced the performance in this particular film, being true to Lady Susan's character.

reply

I also didnt noticed that she maybe used botox
.

I am also not a fan with actors and actresses using it. However by playing lady Susan it actually fits. Lady susan would be a woman who would have used botox etc if it was available back then. I think i would actually be more bothered if there were a lot of age lines visible. Cause than i wouldn't understand why lady susan would be so seductive and interesting for men. Maybe they even enhanced her youthfull apperance especially for the movie.

But in general i disapprove it also when botox and plastic surgery is used

What I find sad is this conversation and the literally hundreds of pages on IMDB full of criticism of actress's appearances. If they don't get surgery, they look old and should be put out to pasture, if they do get surgery than they are criticized for falsifying their appearance or being as you have written, "Dishonest to their craft" (ridiculous). I don't see nearly the same criticism of men's appearance.

Unfortunately, actors undergo the most intense scrutiny about their appearance-as a quick glance at any actresses page on IMDB will prove. It's the majority of the audience and their unreasonable demands for perfection and beauty that must change.

Well said.

Just for the records, and just my own opinion: I found Kate Beckinsale's facial expressions more vivid in "L&F" than in the latest "Underworld" -- with both films playing in cinema literally side by side. Of course this is mainly due to the roles. She always looks the most beautiful when smiling.
