Impossible challenge for the types who think this is "bad horror"

Name me what is good horror. And the criteria are:
1. It's not foreign
2. It's from the year 2000 or newer.

No ancient movies, no foreign movies. I've pretty much seen every horror film made since 1995. Every damn one. And 99% of them are terrible. House of Wax terrible. But The Conjuring, and to a lesser extent this sequel, are right there in the top 10. I also put Stir of Echoes, Session 9, and The Descent in the top 10. If all of these aren't "good horror", then nothing is, and you're just a pretentious douche and I feel sorry for you.

Are you not entertained?!

reply

I do not think this is bad horror but to add some films to your list 2 at a time

Feast:

Why? Gore lovers everywhere can appreciate the buckets of it. Also the jumps scares were appropriate ie: snatching boy, also movie didn't take itself to seriously almost a satire heroes, and other little quick bits about each character. Don't necessarily enjoy comedy in my horror films but this was done right I thought.

The Grudge/ Ju-On:

Why? Atmospheric and jump scares! The film did a great job in just creeping you out and when vulnerable scared you. The movie was slow at some points but made up for it some other areas which threw pacing off just a tad. The movie started to fall apart on itself towards the end of the film but all in all it was a good horror film.

reply

Feast was terrible lol.

Stir of Echoes, to an extent, and definitely The Descent and Session 9, yes, that's "good horror" (not "top 10 worthy", maybe, but still).

The Conjuring (2013) is entertaining and well crafted but, really, nothing more. This one has a high production value and good acting but is horribly written and the directing is bland and phoned in and, yes, they are both "bad horror".

Here's a list (in no particular order) of way better horror movies than The Conjuring (both the original and the sequel), that matches your criteria (even though "no foreign movies" makes no sense);

The VVitch (2015)
Lords of Salem (2012)
It Follows (2014)
The Babadook (2014)
The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
Sinister (2012)
You're Next (2011)
We're still here (2015)
V/H/S (2012)
Oculus (2013)

These are just the first ten off the top of my head - and they're all post 2010. Going back before that...

The Mist (2007)
Evilenko (2004)
House of 1000 corpses (2003) / The Devil's Reject (2005)
The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007)
Eden Lake (2008)
Saw (2004, and only the first one)

...and I could go on and on, but I think you got the idea.

There are also several remakes (The Evil Dead (2013), both Rob Zombie's Halloween, Aja's The Hills Have Eyes (2006), to name a few) which are also better horror movies than The Conjuring.

One last thing, if I may: talking about movies (in general or in a specific genre) and ignoring "ancient" and "foreign" film is the stupidest approach you can take.

Ive stopped here

The Cabin in the Woods
Horror? really? Good also? really now?
Apart from the movie being utter sh!t, the comedy scenes where more than the so-called horror scenes.
I mean seriously? Cabin in the Woods? damn it man.

About Conjuring 2...

All I have to say is that the Transvestite nun killed it... hahah facepalm

"Based on true events/True Story" yeah of course it is LOL.

reply

It seems to me that you are lookin' at it from the wrong angle. It's not meant to be comedic ("Scary Movie" is "comedy"), it's meant to be a satirical parody - both of a certain set of horror tropes and a certain way horror movies are made today.

Christ, the entire ending sequence it's a series of homages to other horror movies: TCitW is basically a love letter to the horror genre :-)

It plays on every, possible, clichè and does so with self-awerness and not just going for the "wink wink" approach.

Granted, it isn't your typical "oh, let's go watch a scary movie" kind of flick, but is it a better, much clever movie - and a better horror movie - than the demonic Nun in the oh, so real, "based on a true story" film?

Yes. Yes it is.

reply

I might be looking it from the wrong angle, but still it is a very bad and dumb movie.

To be honest I dont even care which one is better movie, both sucked and what sucked more in C2 in that they claim that its "based on true story"... these BS claims just tilts me.

reply

I guess we can agree to disagree on the Cabin in the Woods quality - but yeah, the fvcking "based on a true story" gimmick is irritating af. Just as much as the people believing it.

reply

Yeap, Cheers!

conjuring 2 is one of the best new horrors. conjuring 1 was quite dull, though. Deliver Us From Evil however was amazing

reply

LOL'd at the "one of the best"

My opinion does not really matter.

reply

He said it was one of the best "new" horrors.
If you dispute that then tell us some better horrors or don't bother replying.

All you did was basically say "I laugh at your opinion without giving you mine so you cannot laugh at it" lol.

reply

sorry if i laughed at his opinion but cant help it. having known the Warren's are a fraud and the movie was too trying hard to scare. Amityville pre-story at the beginning was lame, they started the jump scare too early for this.

My opinion does not really matter.

reply

Just because it isn't true doesn't mean it isn't a good film lol.
Whether it's scary or not it is a well made and decent film.

reply

Yep, The Conjuring 2 was pretty decent but I liked the first Conjuring more though. 2010+ films that I liked (scored 7) were The Visit, The Babadook, He Never Died, The Witch, Oculus. You may not like one or more of these movies, but I enjoyed their story. Care to share good horror movies BeOneOfUs? I would appreciate it.

My opinion does not really matter.

reply

I would recommend Kill List, House of The Devil, Starry Eyes, The Woman, The Loved Ones and The Canal.
All decent modern horrors IMO.

reply

Check out Last Shift if you haven't yet. I respect most of your choices here. Had a hard time with Starry Eyes, I felt it lost it's way by the end.

reply

The Descent, The Babadook, The Others, Black Swan, Mulholland Drive, The Conjuring, The Ring, 28 Days Later, Let Me In are all much, much better than The Conjuring 2 and that's just off of the top of my head. I really wanted to like this as I enjoyed the first one but it was so by the numbers and predictable that it did nothing for me.

P.S. Honorable mention for Sweeney Tood which is more of a musical with horror elements.

I don't know why you are asking for non-foreign films when they are some of the best horror films I've ever seen The Orphanage, The Devils Backbone & Let the Right One In are among the best in the genre.

reply

I did like The Conjuring 2 but I can think quite a few modern horrors I loved...

Just off the top of my head..

The Hills Have Eyes (remake) The Devil's Rejects, House of The Devil, The Babadook, The Witch, The Ring (Remake) Kill List.

reply

Agreed

reply

So much for being an "impossible challenge" lol.

reply

I agree with the OP, and I would add A Haunting in Connecticut,( 1&2 ) , Possession,
The Messengers
Skeptic
Shutter
Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh
Silent Hill
Thirteen Ghosts
House on Haunted Hill
As Above, So Below
Innkeepers
Vacancy
Intruders
Case 39
Dream House
1408
Dead Silence
Don't Be Afraid of the dark
Dark Water

and 2 of the best, but admittedly 'foreign'.
The Orphanage
The Awakening

There are a lot more, but I don't want to go on and on with the list forever... And I admit some of the above are a bit corny (13 Ghosts, House on haunted Hill...they're still noteworthy as being watchable over and over.
My all time favorite horror movie predates them all...The Shining.

I feel sorry for you that your appreciation of cinema is so horrible that you think the Conjuring is a good movie.

It's very hard to find a good horror movie because the genre is so formulaic and full of so many cliches there is very small room for innovation and for good films to truly come out of it. You also have to factor in its disposability, once the scare is gone most horror films are useless. You go even further and say you don't want to hear about the classics, well the world population has become exponentially dumber and dumber since the 2000, so the horror genre is particularly in the pits but since you insist, The Ring and The Exorcism Of Emily Rose were good horror movies.
