The scariest thing in that house was..
The moldy, lead painted, dilapidated wall. That's what probably made everyone crazy.

sharelol - i swear i was thinking the same thing! that wall was so nasty, it cannot be healthy. probably gave everybody hallucinations ;-)
shareThat wall and the flooded basement bothered me the whole time. I kept asking my wife, "Why couldn't the mom and kids take an hour one Saturday and do something with that disgusting wall?"
And why was the basement flooded all the time? Was it just a leaky basement and the landlord was a scumbag?
The real mother was a chav and so were her kids
No demon would have lived there either.

I figured that, in the 70s, a wall like that would be normal. Those were medieval times.
shareThe family were apparently living in poverty and that's why the wall and the entire house was so dire.
shareif you look at the actual photos of the house it doesn't look anywhere near as bad. pretty tidy and boring really, which isn't very good for a scary movie, hence the enhancement
shareThe toilet was indoors and they had a personal telephone, hardly impoverished. Most working-class folks in the late 70's shared a big red phonebox with everyone else on their street.

The wall was the scariest thing? Jeez for me that was the freaking chair, throw that thing away, hell burn it.
Even more creepy when we learn the mother died in it too. I mean who the hell keeps a chair that someone died in it, she even kept it AFTER all this.
lol I was thinking the exact same thing
shareThey also had a big colour TV with a remote control - in the 70s!
sharenot at all !
the scariest thing in the movie were all that posters sticked to wall about Starsky & Hutch in the little girl room ! it was insance, a monstruous thing ! poor child !
I figured it'd be the small lake they had in the basement. Made no sense to me that they'd live there with their basement flooded like that. All the black mold that would cause...and the health problems. It was disgusting!

Well, it was said they have money problems and it wasn't like they had anywhere else to go.
