In the novel he dies of a heart attack. What exactly happens to him in the film?

I don't think they explained it. He's only seen in the security tape and in Langdon's vision.

No that was a hallucination from the drugs they gave Langdon.

Nothing, presumably. In the e-mail he sent to Langdon he says that he was going into hiding. I suppose he stayed hidden until things calmed down.
