"Steven's Birthday" Discussion

That was cute! 

Something a little more eventful would've been nice, but the thing to remember is that it was about Steven literally and figuratively growing up, the issue of his aging when he's half-gem (we know how you feel, sistah!), and above all his relationship with Connie, which was the meat of the episode. It HAS been a while since they got together.

I'll admit I'm very disappointed that Peridot didn't meet/interact with Greg and Connie (which I'm still looking forward too), but this really isn't her sort of thing and I guess someone needs to see about the bigger story.

...plus, Baby Steven was just SOOOOO adorable! 

Also, very interesting to learn about character's ages. Not only Steven's, but Connie and especially Greg...

Hey Greg, nice new van! Not too fond of new shirt, tho.

Loved the Estelle reference. High five if you caught it.

Yeah, this one was a pleasure too. I've honestly been too curious on the subject on Steven's aging since Too Many Birthdays, although moreso about Steven's aging limits rather than the physical changes. I doubt he could live to be thousands of years old like other Gems (although there's probably even greater age variation between their classes), but at least 100, surely.

But it's happy to know that even after his latest display of Incredibly Weird Gem Power, Connie is still incredibly dedicated to Steven. Her loyalty is something to triumph.

I think that Steven is just as immortal as any other Gem, given his ability to alter his age based on how he feels.

When he's mastered all his powers he will be able to 'feel young' forever and remain ageless like other Gems.

reply

I do hope they allow Steven to age naturally. I mean, if he and Connie (or any human girl) ever want to have a relationship, Steven may not be able to.

For instance, if Steven is 20 but continues looking 10, how can he date a fellow 20-year-old? Sure, in the context of the cartoon, we'll see the comedy of it. BUT, thinking about it in more realistic terms, it would look sorta....illegal...

I can already see a potential scenario, whether they actually show it or not and that being Steven more or less permanently fusing with Connie so she shares his youth.

reply

Steven just has to stop obsessing over his age. There's no particular way to act 14 anymore than there is 12 or 19 etc. That was his misstep here.

The end of the episode more or less shows Steven can and will experience human puberty, even if he is not especially conscious of it.

Now...as far as the show showing it..we might be running into an Adventure Time scenario here where showing physical aging would affect the marketability of Steven's design so he just stays the cute, chubby little guy he is until the end of Season 3 or something.

reply

It wasn't really about acting older since he was still pretty much the same after he changed. It was about looking older. His problem, and the main issue of the episode, was that he was literally a teenager stuck in an eight-year-old's body, so that was why he did what he did.

reply

I disagree. Steven's look and attitude to match were based on his perception of a specific age, a perception that was flawed. He literally and figuratively over extended himself to fit an idea he believed Connie indulged.
