That Will Be All (Discussion)

AWW YEAH FIRST VILLAIN SONG, YO.

NOTE: if you're thinking of doing one of those 1-10 hour loop videos for the Pearls' opening warbling, then you're not doing the Earth a great service.

Okay, that was a fun little five-parter. Not as high-stakes as I thought and not as much payoff, but this capped with such a gleeful victory that I can excuse those tropes and the weak second episode. Holly Blue Agate was a great character (who'll hopefully return) and it's a breath of fresh air to meet some new friendly Gems for once. (I dig short brown Beta.)

Not to mention having antagonists having grief as a primary motivation for their actions, a rare trope in all-ages cartoons. It's a good contrast with the Diamonds having a need to be constantly 'perfect'. (Also, they're taller than I remember!)

Hope we get to see these characters soon, and I suppose the Zoomans'll need rescuing as well. Pretty sure they're the easily rehabilitated type.

It's worth noting that short brown Beta gem was called carnelian...not an amethyst.

Amethyst feels better knowing she has a bunch of also "screwed up" gem relations. Would these amethysts be allies if they knew who Steven was? Also, do they match up with any of the various holes Peridot analyzed in "Beta"?

And what of the bubbled rose quartz gems? Steven didn't grab any bubbled rose-quartz gems on his way out. Would've been awkward for one to reform and see an image of Rose.

Diamonds are bit too huge. But whatever.

Yellow Diamond's song with the double meaning, "What's the use in feeling blue?" to us, "What's the use in feeling, Blue?" to her.

Song said Lapis is for terraforming (leading us to wonder if Lapis is still hiding something about her past)...who was for terrifying?

Blue Diamond didn't recognize her long lost Sapphire. Hmmm.... Can't tell other gems apart?

Will Blue Diamond abduct more humans?

reply

The events of "The Answer" were over 5000 years ago. Surely the Diamonds treat Sapphires and Rubies as lesser gems and wouldn't remember them specifically, especially after such a long time.

reply

They aren't human. Can only guess how their memories work.

Sapphires are rare, aristocratic gems, too. How many are there? Again, no idea. LOL.

The line said that Agates terrify... which would probably have us imagining Agates as some sort of terrorism based weapon of war if we hadn't been introduced to an Agate in this arc. In the context of what we see from Holly Blue Agate the line must have actually meant it in the same sense that a drill sergeant scares the troops under their command into conformity. Holly's role is to discipline the soldiers stationed at the zoo with her.

The bomb was excellent, and we'll surely see Agate again, considering the Crewniverse have stated that we will never see a character just once in the show. I think the song was awesome and unexpected, too.

I liked the episode, but was overall disappointed that with an "it's time for answers" promo with Pink's palanquin we never got any about her. We're no closer to learning what happened than we were before and Steven's now been 'scared straight' since his curiosity nearly lost him his dad. Sadly, that probably means the subject will be dropped for a long while.

reply

Not quite. There's an upcoming episode called Storm in the Room, which has Steven going into Rose's room for answers.

From the moment I learned who was voicing Yellow Diamond, I KNEW we were in for an epic villain song. I wasn't disappointed  
I just hope it didn't cost the Crewniverse too much...

Such an eventful, lively episode. Here I thought the thing with Amethyst is that she spent her whole life on Earth with no knowledge of Gem culture...turns out her whole darn race is a buncha goofballs and frat boys!  Her meeting and befriending them deserves its own episode (or at least a short)! And I'll bet even money they'll join up with the CGs later. I'll also bet that Holly Blue will return to pester them for a while like Peridot and Jasper did.

Though I can't shake the feeling that YD's gonna try something soonish...

I'm gonna miss seeing these episode discussions on here, come the 20th this board and its postings will be deleted forever.

Funny how amethyst's cut is 8XM... M for Michaela. So cool to see the voice for blue diamond is singer songwriter Lisa Hannigan who was in Damien Rice's band!

What's The Use of Feeling was a pretty interesting song. Considering the diamonds probably have never felt great loss (since blue and yellow wouldn't feel close to any of their subjects), so when Pink Diamond was shattered they didn't know how to take it! But yellow certainly cared for Pink but not her ways so much...
And it was pretty funny seeing those little pearls sing and dance by Yellow.
I wonder if yellow wants to use those gems (similar to Rose Quartz I'm assuming) to her advantage instead of shattering them.
When yellow sings " a lapis terraforms" what does she mean? Terraform means to "transform (a planet) so as to resemble the earth, especially so that it can support human life." ??

Lastly, can anyone tell me (before IMDb cuts off the message boards), who is Ruby's diamond? Because if it's yellow, then I wonder if she felt weird seeing her. Also that would mean everyone in the crystal gems is from a different diamond, except Steven and Amethyst I suppose.
