Why don't the elephants talk?
All the other animals do.

It sets them apart as these almost deity-like characters among the rest of the animal cast. Giving them any dialogue would humanize them.

After all, tomorrow is another day ~ Gone with the Wind
I was disappointed by this as well and thought it a strange inconsistency. The minion monkeys don't talk either, only Louie.
shareWatching a film doesn't necessarily demand abandoning your imagination....there were thousands of those minion monkeys in the ancient ruins, all of them highly disturbed. When filming mass crowd or battle scenes of humans you don't hear each individual's utterances over and above the lead character's do you? A focus is on the important characters to advance the story action, otherwise chaos is the result. This is what a director is for, even when the film is animated!
shareThey do talk....but its with their trunks, not their mouths. And sound is manifestation is rare. It's called trumpeting, for obvious reasons. Any "Tarzan" film will evidence this, even Disney films. See also Disney's "Dumbo"
