Literally everything about Shere Khan was contrived

-He kills Akela and the wolves literally do nothing, even though they could overtake him with sheer numbers; instead they just stand there like bitches, and fear just isn't a good enough excuse for it. For all their talk of wolf pack strength, they had nothing.
-Baloo attacks and almost beats Shere Khan but the rest of the kingdom doesn't help him to make sure the tiger's done for, because if they did they'd crush him. Instead they leave Baloo to fend for himself and Baloo loses (as if a tiger could kill a frikkin' 850lb bear).
-There's a bunch of frikkin' rhinos among them. All they had to do was gore Shere Khan once while he was distracted with Mowgli AND JUST ABOUT EVERYBODY ELSE. But again, the rhinos just stand there like idiots.
-Shere Khan fights and fails to kill Bagheera several times despite handily beating him each time. LOL!
-The rest of the animals finally get off their butts to prevent Shere Khan from catching Mowgli... and Shere Khan somehow manages to overtake everyone. DOUBLE LOL!

I'm sorry, but everything about how Shere Khan was written, save Idris Elba's presence and delivery, just sucked, plain and simple.

1.) Because the wolves are obviously intimated by Shere Khan and even if there's a pack of them, they're still a pack of small wolves against a big Bengal Tiger. Think of it like a pack of hyenas against a big lion.

2.) Baloo is meant to be a Himalayan Brown Bear which are the species of bears native to India. These types of bears are omnivores who eat fruit, honey and small animals. He is not a Polar Bear or Kodiak Bear which are designed for hunting and killing large animals. So it's not a stretch for him to lose to a Bengal Tiger, who are larger than the bears native to India. In this part of the world, it's the tiger who is the apex predator of the ecosystem, not bears.

3.) Shere Khan only fights Bagheera twice in the film. He doesn't kill him because what purpose would that serve? Bagheera's little more than a nuisance to Khan.

1: Yes the pack outnumbers, but as pack members they are used to following an Alpha. Shere Khan killed their Alpha (pretty easily, too), so it's not that weird that they would be subservient to him after that.

2: Baloo is referred to as a Sloth Bear. He's not as big and strong or as well armed as a Kodiak or Grizzly. He's also generally lazy, laid back, and avoids confrontation. Shere Khan on the other hand is an apex predator and practiced killer.

Wrong analogy. A pack of hyenas can EASILY kill even the biggest lion. Even 3 or 4 hyenas are enough to chase a lion away from his kill.
