Shere Khan voice wasn't right

It lacked character to me and felt out of place, no offence to Idris Elba. A voice like Jeremy Irons or Alan Rickman would have suited it better, but Elba just sounds like a typical English Londoner that you might here, and in this he's simply an angry Londoner. Doesn't go with a jungle setting.

NONE of the voicers were right, everything was way too low in fact the whole of this film audio is just…BAD.

None of the voice actors have any sort of character to their vocals there is no dynamic contrast and above all the words are just ‘said’, timbre wise everything is too low, overall this results is boring lifeless muddy dialogue.

If you compare this to something like the Lion Kings casting there is a world of difference.

Dubbing of the Sound and Score is pretty poor as well, the balance between everything is poor a lot of places the dialogue is completely lost.

As much as I love Jeremy Irons and Alan Rickman, I can't see either of them as Shere Khan. Irons already played Scar, so if he were to voice Khan, I'd just picture a rehash of that character. Rickman had a great voice, but too gentle sounding to fit Khan.

Are you aware OP, of the British Raj traveling through India and many living in that setting? I don't see how a fantasy tiger talking with a Londoner accent would be out of place. I thought Elba was a good choice.

reply

It's a bit different. I dare say the accent has changed since the 19th century. Elba's accent is like your modern sounding London one, and we, or at least I perhaps being English myself, hear it about a lot. It's almost anachronistic in this and lacks that bit of character that others like those I mentioned, possess in their voices. In any case, it's an evil jungle animal we're talking about, not a human being from the British Raj. I just don't feel like it belongs.

Like the above poster says, the voice work and the dialogue were the weakest part of this movie, with the visuals being the best.

reply

I'm still not seeing what exactly is anachronistic about it. There's nothing about Elba's vocal characterization that sounds that different from the other actor/actress's performances.

I feel like you and the other poster are just looking for random things to complain about.

Maybe they should have gone for a George Sanders soundalike.

It's that man again!!
