I'm sorry but what plot was there to the original? It was just Mowgli running from place to place with no sense of connective tissue until Shere Khan appears about 2/3rd's of the way through.
Baloo, Bagheera, King Louie and Shere Khan were good in the original, but the rest of the film was merely above-average. I feel like people have way too much blind nostalgia for that film and overlook its faults.
This new version, I feel, has more of a story, a more engaging main character, character development for everyone and just has more scale to it.

The original Jungle Book as written by Rudyard Kipling was a violent humorous action adventure.
And this film managed to be a mix of both Kipling's tone, the earlier Disney film and pure action-adventure.
