Whither Goes Kim? (SPOILERS for Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.)
"Better Call Saul" is a series populated almost entirely by "the walking dead." As with John Travolta in the Third Act of "Pulp Fiction," we are enjoying the character even as we KNOW he is going to die, because we have already seen his death -- Act Three is a flashback before that killing.
As a "prequel" "Better Call Saul" brings back to life such interesting characters as Mike, Gus, Hank, and Lydia.
But "Better Call Saul" also brings us a handful of NEW characters, characters we never saw on Breaking Bad. One was Chuck McGill, the mentally ill but brilliant older brother of Saul/Jimmy.
With five seasons over, Chuck's fate has been dealt with.
And that leaves Kim.
(Oh, it leaves Lalo, too -- but Kim's a bigger deal.)
One of the producers of Better Call Saul , promoting the show, raised her eyebrow and slyly noted "We know that Kim isn't show on Better Call Saul -- so what happens to her?"
What, indeed.
There are numerous possibilities and we know that Season Six(yet unfilmed due to COVID) will finally give us the answer. A key question is: how will Kim fare "in each of three time periods":
TIME PERIOD NUMBER ONE: BETTER CALL SAUL TIME. Will Kim die before Better Call Saul is over? Or perhaps "disappear"?
TIME PERIOD NUMBER TWO: BREAKING BAD TIME. If Kim doesn't die on Better Call Saul -- where WAS she during Breaking Bad? Disappeared? Still in Albequerque but never talking to Saul? Or actually WITH Saul in Albequerque until he had to disappear himself?
TIME PERIOD NUMBER THREE: OMAHA CINNEBON TIME. If Kim doesn't die on Better Call Saul, and didn't die during Breaking Bad(but we didn't see it)...might she still turn up for a 'happy ending" with Saul/Jimmy...in Omaha? And to get that happy ending...do we have to forgive Kim and Saul everything we know about their dark sides?
It will be interesting to see. With only one season left, there is the possibility that "Better Call Saul" can spend episodes in any or all three of the time periods above.
I'm thinking that folks are hoping that Kim survives everything, with or without Saul.
But I'm also thinking that folks are hoping for that happy ending.
