Real Reason Jimmy Becomes Saul?

Will Jimmy change his name because Chuck has disgraced the McGill name, and been disbarred?

reply

How great was it to hear that at the end of next week's promo?! Of course...that doesn't guarantee that's what we'll see, maybe it's just the idea for the name or something (it didn't sound like Jimmy's/Odenkirk's voice to me).

I always figured it was because he had to split and run and get a new identity, which isn't a stretch since that's a service he would provide to those in BB, but distancing himself from Chuck could be the reason too. Chuck being the one disbarred never actually crossed my mind which is dumb of me now that I think about it, haha. But having that reversal would be pretty compelling to see.

After all this blows over (if it does) I could see Jimmy wanting to make a clean break, do the shady law he's most adept at, and start anew. The only loose thread with that really is Kim. I always wonder what will become of her when he starts becoming Saul more than Jimmy....

I'm wondering if it might not take a much darker turn, with Jimmy not wanting to be known as the lawyer who drove his brother to suicide.

If the panel concludes from Chuck's behavior that Jimmy is exonerated, but Chuck must face (and, ultimately, fail) a competency hearing, it would seem Chuck's disbarment might be at hand.

Having lost his wife, and (maybe even more important to him) his right to practice law, Chuck might have nothing to live for. If he is driven to suicide, Kim might not be able to stomach being in the relationship any longer, having been instrumental in the progression of events. We never heard anything of Chuck or Kim in Breaking Bad.

Interesting you mention suicide because the final shot of the episode tipped those scales, in my opinion. I wondered if panning up to the buzzing EXIT sign was there way of telling us this might be what happens with Chuck. Since Chuck loves the law so much I could see disbarment as its own form of death to him, worse than just actually doing it.

I think neither of them being mentioned in BB is more of advantage than not. It means they really could do anything with them if they wanted and it would make sense. Either they're dead/not around or he's trying to keep his personal from his, ahem, less-than-professional professional work! Certainly there is collateral damage to be had though, so we'll see!

YES I thought the same thing with the EXIT sign!

reply

Yep - wondering about that exit sign too!

Maybe we were on to something?

Good call you guys.

If he did, he sure doesn't run very far since he's still practicing in the same town in Breaking Bad. People would know his face and his style, new name or not. I figure he just wants to break completely with Chuck and his whole former life, and just start over as a new man so he can finally be who he wants to be and not what everyone else expects him to be.

Well put.

I think he does not get disbarred but maybe he makes a deal to use a different name, and the Bar Association allows him to continue with a different name as a sort of plea bargain to appease Chuck so that it severs all familial ties between them.
Like a legal name change would make sure that he never affects Chuck's reputation (if Chuck has any rep left).

I think it is Kim's voice in the preview saying Saul Goodman

reply

I agree, he can't be disbarred, since he's still practicing in ABQ in BB, and he certainly couldn't do that secretly.

I question whether Chuck is going to have any power to dictate terms after the way the hearing went. He'll be lucky to hold onto his own license.

I may be completely wrong, but I have a feeling the name change will be for another reason. I'm really looking forward to seeing where this goes.

reply

My theory is Chuck goes on a killing spree which sullies the family name.

S3 E6 shows he started using the Saul name (and a disguise) to re-sell his already paid for advertising spots.
He does not get disbarred, but suspended for a year.
I wonder how the rest of the season will go if he can't do any legal work.
season 4 will probably jump ahead 1 year to when he can practice again, and by that time he's re-open his practice as Saul Goodman.

He said in his first scene in BB that he uses a Jewish sounding name because a lot of people expect a lawyer that is "a member of the tribe. "

So now it looks like he had to change his name and his type of practice (from elder law to criminal law) because he voluntarily trashes his reputation just to get the old lady reconciled with her friends.
None of those old people would ever use him again even after his suspension is over. he almost throws out his rolodex.
But he made some good money helping that drug dealer get out of community service, and I think that will give him the idea that there are a lot of criminals with a lot of money out there and he can start over with a new name and new practice.
