Who was a better "Judge of Character???" Olive or Henry???
Who was a better "Judge of Character???" Olive or Henry???
If you think it was Olive, then please explain the reason(s) why you feel that way.
If you think it was Henry, then please also explain the reason(s) why you feel that way.
Imo, Olive is the better judge of character due to the way she realized her former student Kevin was about to kill himself, while Henry remains completely clueless about what's happening (even after Olive has Kevin attending the pre-wedding dinner and spending the night at her place where she also has him dispose of the shotgun in the bay area).
And Olive also knew that her son's marriage wouldn't last, while once again Henry was completely clueless about the RUDE way that the bride-to-be and the rest of her family behaved.
The scene where Henry plays with the "Toy Train" set in the attic -- after being told his son's getting a divorce (meaning no grand kids would be forthcoming) -- also illustrates how Henry's basically a "Dreamer" whereas Olive is more of a "Realist" (which was also illustrated by the way she tells him to "Snap Out of it)."

OLIVE: Henry? What are you doing?
HENRY: Oh, hmm You know, I always thought that someday I'd bring the grandkids up here, show 'em their dad's old train set.
We'd dust it off and put the tracks together, get it running again.
Maybe I'll set it up anyway.
OLIVE: - Henry? - What? Snap out of it.
On the whole, Olive strikes one as being much more intuitive and a much "Deeper Thinker" than her superficial husband seems to be.
The other scene where he encounters the girl who places Greeting Cards on Display in the New Pharmacy (after Henry's retired) also demonstrates the same type of thing. How shallow Henry can be whenever it comes to understanding people and how well they relate (or don't relate in the case of the girl that Henry speaks to about her father that she says "doesn't want to know what she thinks of him). Henry: I forgot it was that time of year.
The Greeting Card Girl: Excuse me?
Henry:- Father's Day.
Girl: -Oh.
Yeah.
Henry: Did you send yours off yet?
Girl: - My what?
Henry: -A card to your dad?
Girl: Oh. No, hadn't thought about it.
Henry: No? I'm sure he'd appreciate it.
Girl: It's a made-up holiday.
I don't think he cares.
Henry: Well, everybody likes to get a card.
It's a nice reminder that you're thinking about 'em.
Girl: My dad doesn't want to know what I think about him.
Henry: Oh. Gee, that's too bad.
Girl: No, it isn't.
Henry strikes one as being the type who only sees whatever it is that he wants to see. On the other hand, the mind of Olive tends to dive deep down below the surface to see what's really there.
Agree?
Disagree???
If so, then how so???
