Henry "Spoon Feeding" Denise

Was anyone else creeped out by the scene where Henry "Spoon Feeds" Denise as if she were a baby sitting in a high chair while his wife and son sit there watching him with looks of shock on their faces at what they're seeing???

Why was Henry so utterly clueless about the effect that it was having on them???

reply

Because he was starved for some form of affection. Olive was horrible to him. Henry was in fact a very sensitive, compassionate man. If he had tried to spoon feed Olive she'd have started screaming at him. He was enjoying being kind to a receptive human being.

He ends up developing a crush on Denise. Initially, he enjoys someone, anyone, being receptive to his good heartedness.

The son was pretty much a weirdo, and Olive, it didn't matter what he did, she looked at him in disgust, or indifference (remember the card he gave her at the beginning).

Spoon feeding an adult is odd, I don't quite remember why he did spoon feed her. I'd have to watch it again. If one recalls, she was helpless after she accidentally (no spoilers) did what she did. Maybe in that moment she wasn't capable of feeding herself. One could be wrong though - it's been awhile since I've taken a look at OK.

what HENRY did probably also results in not just ONE but in TWO SUICIDES (in the DEATHS of O'Casey and KEVIN'S MOTHER).

And at least Olive SAVE'S LIVES and wasn't indirectly responsible for anyone's death the way HENRY seems to be in this story.

But for most viewers HENRY also seems like a SAINT to them and OLIVE is the SINNER.

Does anyone else have a more balanced or a more nuanced view of the situation instead of seeing things so simplistically (a black vs white situation) where Henry is viewed as a SAINT and OLIVE as the SINNER???

What would you have done if you witnessed your husband/wife/or parent spoon feeding another adult at the dinner table???

Do you think Olive handled the situation correctly???

Also NOTE the way Henry got rid of Olive's friend Casey whereas Olive was much more understanding of the feelings that Henry felt for Denise.

Also NOTE the way Olive predicted Henry would get involved with someone younger after the death of the other older woman who originally worked for him prior to Denise being hired at the pharmacy.

Olive to Henry (after the death of the older woman who previously worked for him):

Olive: Now you can hire someone young and cute who thinks you're a God.

Won't that be nice?

Henry: It will, actually.

Olive: Mmm.

So Henry also ADMITS how nice it would be to hire someone like Denise who thinks he's a GOD. And maybe its because Denise also wasn't the first time that Henry had a crush on a young girl who worked for him???

This is the kind of NUANCED situation that tends to get overlooked in this story.

Maybe someone who has watched the program recently, as opposed to someone who hasn't seen it in years.

Good luck finding that somebody.

In the meantime, from vague memory - Henry cut O'Casey's rides because he was insecure, suspecting Olive was attracted to O'Casey - which in fact was true.

Olive was nice to Henry, yeah, when he was comatose. Otherwise she was horrible to him.

Henry's intentions into what turned to be an awful marriage were good. How could he know how Jerry would turn out?

Olive was just as rude to Bill Murray's character - until she realized there was no one left and in fact, she didn't wish to die yet (recall failed suicide attempt). She went to him because no one was left, no one, including her son , wanted anything to do with her.

--------------

You obviously chose to see things from Henry's POV and disregard the way 2 people died as a result of what he did, whereas Olives SAVED the lives of 2 people (her former student and the girl who fell over the side of the cliff that was rescued by the suicidal former student).

Also NOTE the way NO ONE (not even Henry's own son who doesn't visit him for four years) was there for him in his coma like state even though Henry had been there for the needs of the town prior to that as their pharmacist.

The wife of Murray's character didn't even recognize him -- and after she's told who he is -- she also treated him like a low life employee or servant -- by asking him to get her something for nausea on her upcoming vacation (even though he didn't own or run the store anymore).

In other words, NO ONE but Olive was left for Henry either at the end of his life, even though Henry had tried to be friendly and wasn't as overtly rude to them as Olive could be. That's the kind of SUBTLE NUANCE that people like yourself keep overlooking in this story.

That the relationships between these characters are much more multi-layered, meaningful and complicated than the other overly simplistic views that one finds being expressed.

Everything isn't "Black or White". There are many "Shades of Grey" to be found.

Again, the QUESTIONS and other comments that were put forth which you've IGNORED (which is also RUDE) are the following:

What would you have done if you witnessed your husband/wife/or parent spoon feeding another adult at the dinner table???

Do you think Olive handled the situation correctly???

You've also IGNORED the ORIGINAL QUESTIONS put forth in the OP as well which are as follows:
