So just saw that the extraordinary Rochard Jenkins was not even nominated for the Golden Globe. Seriously?? He's better than all the other actors in his category (I watched all of them in their respective series, and there is no way... That might be silly, but I just wanted the guy to be recognized. I'm still in awe of his performance after one month. Oh well..

So glad I'm not the only one who noticed. But what rubs salt in the wound is that Bill Murray was nominated instead. As great as Bill is, he was in it for 20 or so minutes and played himself like always... a real shame, Richard Jenkins was the heart of this and was on the same level as McDormand...

WEll put.
I agree.
Do you ever get the feeling some of the WINNERS are chosen due to their NAME RECOGNITION, and the way they can probably SELL more magazines if their face is on the covers of those magazines that sit at the CHECK OUT COUNTERS of Grocery stores???
So if Richard's face was there instead of MURRAY's then not many people would RECOGNIZE him thus also leading to a drop in sales???
So maybe some WINNERS also get chosen due to their MARKET-ABILITY or ABILITY to sell magazines???
You have more company. I actually took a while to get here after seeing this because I thought ,how could I be so wrong. Bill Muray did a fine job,but award worthy, compared to ..well it's nuts. I would be embarressed,if I was Muray..the whole award thing is just that, embarrassing!! And France's McDormand was amazing...it cheapens her wonderful acting, the whole thing is ruined when they do this...like many voting didn't even see it!!

Me, too! I was looking at the nominees, though, and it's a pretty strong category this year. Pretty sure Frances will win and she will def. thank him in her speech. He did get nominated for the SAG and that to me is alot more important.
Yes, I agree with you. I think Frances will win, and SAG is a more important award. Nonetheless, I was upset. I know it is a strong category, but I still think he's got the best performance in the category.
I cant' understand how Bill Murray was nominated and he wasnt.

I know it. Especially since Bill Murray was in 20 minutes or less of the show. I meant that in terms of performance. Jenkins was infintely superior than Murray.

I'm not sure how it's possible to say that Jenkins was infinitely superior to Murray. The question we ought to ask is if Murray did what he needed to do to make his character feel like a distinct, real person, and to encourage empathy for him. Did he make a major contribution to the drama in his supporting role? I think so.
If we must compare the two actors, Murray does a lot with economy, and that's a rare skill he shares with Jenkins. He also played a less easily sympathetic character than Jenkins', so one must credit him for that. Of course, casting him helped with empathy because he's naturally charismatic, and automatically comes with lots of positive associations. But he certainly didn't coast, in my view.
hmmm, hadn't thought about the leading v. supporting angle...I guess I assumed he'd fall under supporting, which is why Bill's nom struck me as odd...
I understand your pov, Whatlarks (and I don't like comparing performances) but I think that to award any other male actor in this piece while leaving Jenkins out is crazy. In itself, it doesn't bother me that Bill was nominated (a great and effective performance), it's Jenkins' ommission that makes it weird...
It's funny...I tell myself "who cares?" about award shows and most years I end up being confused/annoyed by a glaring ommission...I'll try not to be such a hypocrite next year haha
I know what you mean about "who cares?" and then being annoyed by omissions. One thing to keep in mind is that the Golden Globe judges aren't critics of any distinction. They're actually nobodies who pump out weekly/daily fodder about celebrities, brief "reviews," and such. So of course they're going to bungle it.
The only good thing about the Globes is that it's casual and everyone gets loaded, so it's way more spontaneous and fun than the Oscars, which I find a major slog.
I agree that omitting Jenkins is stooo-pid. He broke my heart.
You're totally right. I'm always like this too, pis*** because of omissions and saying out loud I'll never watch it again but I always do! Cant help it.

Listen the only reason anybody even goes to pick up a Golden Globe is because they can get drunk during the awards and they feed them well. I look at it just to see who so drunk they think they are at the Oscars. I am not sure but I believe the the people who make all of the decisions about the nominations and winners are The Hollywood Foreign Press that consist of 90 people who have to write 4or 5 published articles and live in Southern California and have the enough booze and food to make everybody happy.
Me, too. I think he was just playing extension of his deadpan persona. But, I still thought his personality meshed with Olive's, especially at that time in her life.
Not only was Jenkins much better than Murray, but the kid who played the prominent part in "Part 2" was much better too. Jenkins was as much a lead as Mccdormand though. But yeah, awards mean nothing. If that required reaffirming.
___ There are two kinds of people in the world, those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.
Yeah, but he seemed like more a lead than Frances in Part 1.
Possibly part of the reason I preferred Part 1. ξΎ The cast was indeed perfect. The young lady playing The Mouse deserves a hearty mention too (though not the effort of looking up her name, evidently ξΎ).

I couldn't agree more. One Hundred per cent, in fact. And personally, I could only stomach twenty minutes of the pretentious, unbearable An Honourable Woman and Gyllenhall's annoying caricature of a posh Brit accent. It was a travesty Frances McDormand didn't win the award and that the brilliant Olive Kitteridge lost to Fargo.
