everything the mother character does...

was either lame, annoying or actually counterproductive lol

reply

That probably makes it appeal more to teens since they think mothers are clueless.

reply

Unless it's their friends mother.
Every teen has a friend who's mother they fancy :D

reply

Yeah she certainly wasn’t a very strong role model for the children.
I liked that she was loving, kind and creative but when they bought in the ‘lapsed alcoholic’ storyline she then seemed absolutely ridiculous.
I enjoyed the show a lot however and really hope the do another season.

reply

The writers dad also often has addict/alcoholic characters I guess it rubbed off on him.

reply

I thought it was to create a storyline that might interest adults. It seemed to me the show was trying to emulate the aspect of Lost in Space that allowed family viewing by toning down the horror a bit (making it more of a mystery) and having a plotline for kids, a plotline for teens, and a plotline for adults. But the mother's plotline was boring and the mother was pretty annoying, in my opinion. I thought the world created by the show was interesting and the various mysteries were good, but the actors who played the teens and their friends did not hold my interest, or the interest of my teenage children!

reply

My issue with the mom is she often forgets about her kids, the dangerous situation she and her family is in, and is somehow mesmerized by whatever door or magic she sees. So annoying.

reply

I guess I thought that was part of the magic of the doors, that they mesmerise you. But, yeah, she's pretty annoying. I can't quite put my finger on it but I just didn't find her storyline interesting at all.

reply

But how come the others weren't mesmerized like her? Because she's an adult?

Also I didn't like that they had her drinking again. She's not the only one traumatized, all her 3 kids are traumatized and they need her, the only adult to lean on and she drinks? The daughter was irritating as well. Only the kid was likable tbh and the side characters.

reply

Yeah definitely agree that the daughter was irritating. Also agree the mom is super annoying. The kid is good. Hmmm, I might be your brain twin.

reply

Haha, but this show has potential though.

reply

Yeah it could be interesting. We were watching with our kids, will have to see if they are interested in another season.

reply

Yeah I think it was renewed, hopefully the writers listen to the viewer criticisms.

I was wondering this as well and read the plot summary of the comics on Wikipedia and there it says that people forget everything about the keys once they turn 18 which also explains why the mother couldn’t remember she was in the mirror or why the uncle was unphased by his own memories and even got a headache trying to remember them..

The daughter was irritating as well.

That’s because she killed her fear and thus isn’t afraid of anything anymore.

reply

I think her killing her fear is part of why she is irritating but I think the actress is also just not that strong? Obviously that is very subjective and just my opinion. I think the actress actually is a teenager (wikipedia says she is 18 currently) so as she gets older and more experienced she will probably get stronger as an actress. From her wiki it also looks like she's British so speaking in an American accent probably makes it a bit harder to carry off an American teen successfully. The actor who plays the older brother is currently 26 so it doesn't surprise me that I find him easier to watch, even though he doesn't act like an actual teenager.

I find Mary Mouser (Cobra Kai) easy to see as a teenager (I think she's also in her 20s). In Lost in Space, Mina Sundwall is actually a teenager and I find her easy to watch too.

My teens did not find the show very compelling and that is probably about the writing. I doubt they notice whether the actors who play the teenagers are very subtle. They both love The Flash and the acting and writing on that is very obvious. Little subtlety at all.

I'm curious to see whether the writers are able to balance a few more angels on the head of a pin in season 2.
