Travis McGee

I like the period vibe of Quarry and the hat drinking, self loathing, amoral slightly misognhnistic character of Mac that can only work in the 1970. A character that uses violence without the need to explain or rationalize it as a "good guy fighting evil, BS. Violence is because he is a badass. This whole peice feels like it is channeling an author from the 1970 John MacDonald who had a detective series where all the titles of the books had a color in The Empty Copper Sea etc. The character of Mac is a dead ringer for the bad boy protagonist, Travis McGee. Then is episode 2, there is Mac drunk by the pool and what'd of eared week worn paperback is sitting on his little Tsble. John D. McDonald A Flash of Green. I am pretty sure the name Mac is a tribute to Mac Donald, and i like the series just a little more for it.

That was The Last One Left, not A Flash Of Green, with cover by the same artist that did the Hard Case Quarry covers, Bob McGinnis. I'm sure Collins, like most of his contemporaries, was influenced quite a bit by JDM. Damn shame nothing ever came of the McGee movie DiCaprio intended to make, although I really can't imagine Leonardo as Travis.
