Question for ardent Banshee fans

My beloved fellow Banshee fans, I'm still in mourning over the loss of my show and haven't watched Quarry yet. I'm in resistance mode, like a 5-year old whose sweets have been taken away. 

What's your verdict? How does it compare to Banshee in terms of action, drama and humour? AND IS THE LEAD CHARACTER AS COMPELLING AS HOOD?

Thank you in advance for your contributions. 

Hi Lisa. I just watched the first two episodes on the weekend.

The pilot was fantastic, and reeled me in for the whole season. A bit of a teaser episode. Engaging lead character, and high quality supporting characters. I think Buddy will end up being just as endearing character as Dewey Crowe. I also enjoyed the directing - the sense of time and place seemed authentic. Second episode was good too, but I hope they go easy on the boozy drunken scenes. We get it.

This show is a bit more serous than Banshee. Slightly slower pace, action is not over the top.

Thanks for the great reply, suncloud!

Sounds very promising, except the "boozy drunken scenes" comment concerns me. That's something that will annoy the living daylights out of me pretty quickly. I hate that kind of thing so much, I avoid movies with alcoholism as a theme, no matter the accolades.

It is just a way to show his path down to hell.

Not about alcoholism at all.

reply

Gotcha, but I just hate that angle. Drunken behaviour annoys the crap out of me, be it on or off screen.

I liked it, but it's a completely different show.

Thanks, nexxuss.

It's nowhere near the level of Banshee, but it's got potential. First two episodes are pretty good setting everything up.

Lisa, I know how you feel. I cried my eyes out during the Banshee finale (because it was ending and because the finale was amazing). Quarry is definitely good. It's too early to tell if it's Banshee amazing, but it's definitely worth checking out. The lead actor has brown hair, a serious love interest and a troubled past - not a bad replacement for Hood. Now that I think about it, I guess you can say the same thing about the lead from Outcast. I do not recommend this show as a Banshee replacement.

Ditto!

Well, NOTHING can replace Banshee.  I really just want another show to make me count the hours before the next airing. There's a few others I watch, but the emotional investment is just not on the same level. I miss that!

Thank you, a good set-up never hurts! Truth be told, I wasn't really hooked by the Banshee pilot (it was E03 that got me); it's only in retrospect and upon repeated viewings that I love the pilot. So as long as it's not horrible...

It's not like Banshee but I'm still enjoying it a lot. Quarry is definitely a lot more serious than Banshee. By that I mean the violence and action is not tongue in cheek like it was on Banshee. Quarry is reluctant to embrace his "darker" nature where Hood eagerly beat the crap out of anyone often.

Buddy on Quarry has some qualities similar to Job though. I would recommend you check out Quarry but don't expect it to be like Banshee because nothing can be.

reply

I wouldn't mind it being more serious, although I found Banshee serious enough, when it mattered. Thanks, pankoeken!

Hey Lisa - been away for a while hence the delay in commenting. I respect everyone else's opinion on Quarry, but this is coming from one of your original Banshee comrades for what that is worth.

After three episodes I have seen, there are many characters on this show that at least appear to be based on Banshee characters thus far, even the opening sequence has quite a few similarities. Here are just a few of my Quarry = Banshee characters...

Mac = Hood. Others have already talked about the similarities and differences. The only thing I will disagree with that someone else said, is that I think Hood was also conflicted about dishing out violence.

Buddy = Job'ish. Is the gay intelligence gathering badass. While him and Mac did not "come up" together, they seem to have immediately developed this friendship out of necessity and some mutual platonic affection.

The Broker = Proctor'ish. Older "crime boss" type character who seems to have everything locked down and sees something in Mac and is trying to utilize the potential he sees.

Karl = Burton'ish - Sort of creepy sidekick to the Broker who instead of not talking much at first, is more wisecracking and may or may not be dangerous.

Detective Olson = Brock'ish. Younger, clean cut and less jaded, but not entirely happy with "the system", seems to know some of the players in a dead body case and appears to be a bit of a "towney" with a need to protect.

Joni & Ruth = Carrie'ish. Seems he split Carrie into two people. Ruth being the mom, struggling to take care of her two children but starting out with a dead husband right away. And Joni displaying some latent baddassery but clearly not "trained" like Carrie was.

Obviously it is very early in the series and these characters will of course change/morph into whatever suites the story line, or whatever they actually are that has yet been revealed. However there are, at least in my humble opinion and at this early stage, more clear similarities to characters from Banshee.

Again, I am not criticizing what others are posting and I could be completely off base, but in my humble opinion, I just feel like hardcore Banshee people will see the same things I see in these characters. They just seem to me to much more closely resemble each other.

EDIT: Bmwash is spot on, nowhere near the action of Banshee and likely will never get there considering when the show is taking place.

I don't care to compare it Banshee I'll check it out as long as the guy character doesn't have a vag. And the gay character's gay not halfway there or just looks and acts like it.

So far a good show but eventually the PC tv police will go after it and try to get it cancelled. Banshee could have went for as many seasons as those crap csi shows. There's nothing on networks these days so it was good to watch it.

This show would never get on the regular ad networks selling hose, toys, dish liquid, tampoons, potato chips blah blah so good for Cinemax.

reply

The action is good, but NOTHING like the fight scenes in Banshee. It's enjoyable, but as good, IMHO.

reply

It's a damn good show, as a fellow Banshee fan who has sorta followed you around, you need to watch it.

Although nothing can scratch my itch for Banshee.

reply

I agree with a poster further up that the shows aren't really comparable. But I still don't like it as a 'replacement' for Banshee.
