The Broker-CIA?

anyone think the Broker may be running a CIA or FBI operation ?

reply

No but you never know.

reply

I've read every quarry book so unless they are changing the character drastically, he isn't

reply

You need to die already.

reply

Why?- he asked a question- it's hardly a bloody important point in the grand scheme of things anyway.
Seriously do you guys never read the source material before watching an adaptation.
Read the books- they are great and the events in the series aren't directly linked anyway. It's much more of a prequel with parts of his backstory being told.
I'll go and die now. XX

Sometimes I read the source material, but for a lot of things I don't. I don't have the time to read everything. In fact, I have about 30 or 40 books sitting on my bookshelf that I need to read still. I got little kids.

If I tried to read the source material for every single thing I watched, I would never get to watch anything. There are only so many hours in the day. Even if I was single and childless, I wouldn't have the time for that. Nobody does.

You've put up more than one spoiler on these threads. You know, there is a built in spoiler black out on these boards so you have to hover over it to actually read it :).

Could you tell me what the books are about and what the broker is? Is Quarry a hitman in all the books? Is the broker nothing more than a drugdealer?

reply

The books all follow quarry years after the events depicted in the series
The original novels are set in the 70s and each novel is a different hit so to speak
The broker is quite mysterious in them and often only mentioned in flashback
The later books are set from the 80s to late 90s and again each one is an independent amatory
Quarry narrates them in a very classic noir style
Most of what happens in the series is new material
Some of what happened was taken from flashback sequences again the broker is only ever mentioned or told in flashbacks he isn't this major a character in the books although his actions lead to big events in quarry's adventures
They are a seriously good read and he is an excellent character to check them out
Oh and I read them completely out of order as the original set of novels have only recently been re released
Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like they are great novels. I'll definitely check them out.

reply

Actually that's very possible.

reply

So yes, the Broker is a CIA drug operative, (or working with them) I guessed it, he is orchestrating the drug trafficking and the opium
Into the US, interesting.
I have not read the books nor will I. It's unfair not any medium to judge one against the other or to expect a visual medium to copy a literary one

reply

How is it unfair to read the books? Just say you don’t like reading. You can enjoy them separately. I like that the show expands on the books, which are pretty limited in their focus -- we don’t actually learn much about Quarry. BUT I do prefer that in the books Quarry doesn’t agonize over killing people. He doesn’t love it and neithere does it really bother him since, in his thinking, these people are dead the minute somebody pays The Broker. (Later on Quarry begins to save people marked for death -- for a fee.) In the books, there isn’t a wife. She left him when he found her screwing around on him (he found her when he came home early from ‘Nam).

And to that dipstick above, these aren’t spoilers. These are beats from the book that the show has already covered and, for the most part, they’ve gone another way.

reply

Oh and yes it's pretty well acknowledged that the CIA was heavily involved in drug trafficking during Viet Nam

reply

As soon as the scene with the broker around the heroin fields came up, "CIA" popped in my mind too.
It is indeed documented that the CIA produced heroin in Viet Nam to generate a cash flow that would fill the budget for finansing contras and the Iran mess amongst other things.
That's a great dramatic development to an already captivating series, which makes the prospects of a second season more exciting than anything that came before the season's finale.
