The broker

So he is a drug dealer? That's what I got out of it.

reply

Yep and he orchestrated the massacre.

reply

That's was my interpretation too...he's a heroine dealer and he orchestrated the massacre to secure the opium fields.

So he's really the author of all Quarry's ills, so to speak.

reply

All roads begin and end with the Broker on this show. Fascinating character and a terrific performance by the actor.

He is a great character. I've never read the books so I don't know if this was in the books. I thought the Broker was in charge of a group of hitmen. I'm a little disappointed he was a just a drug dealer. His guys are basically just enforcers.

I was also disappointed that the Broker is just a drug dealer but my doubts started in episode 5 when the Broker and Mac took a drive into that little town at night. There was a scene where Mac enters a dark house and watches from a back door Broker and some other people sitting and listening to Vietnamese man who had a translator and was talking about a progress in New Orleans and having the best product. Mac got spooked with a flash-back of a mask and ran out and we didn't get to hear the rest. That was the first clue and the Broker getting rid of the Fat man "Credence Mason"s men and drugs was probably to get rid of the competition.

reply

I feel the same way. Like you, I was expecting him to be in charge of a group of hitmen, or at least a high ranking member. I wasn't expecting him to be nothing more than a drugdealer. It's very disappointing.

reply

You should put spoilers in the title!

reply

No he's the broker, he's a neutral party in war that does dealings with both sides. I doubt he deals drugs but I bet he's the middle man. He's actually extremely intelligent and the last episode made me really like his character.

reply

He is def more than just a middle man. He wouldn’t be handling those meetings and going out to opium fields if he was a middle man.

he could be a lieutenant though.

In the books we don’t actually know that much about The Broker. He is much different in the books. Doesn’t have that much personality and he is fairly reserved. He is a business man whose business is in handling hitmen.

I think making him a dealer is disappointingly conventional. It seemed like this show was being careful to avoid convention. The Broker even gave Mac heroin with his money, and I DON’T see The Broker’s wisdom in that. Mac isn’t a hooker. Mac needs his wits to perform his job or else you end up making mistakes like what’s his face in the final episode. So.... the final missed a few beats with The Broker.

Can it be that the show doesn’t quite know what to do with Broker?

reply

I think someone really wanted to bring back Gus Fring.

He also reminds me of the CIA guy in the trailer scene in Apocalypse Now.

My Chimp DNA seems to have lost its password temporarily. Sluggr-2

reply

When did the Broker give heroin to Mac? I must've missed that.

The Broker is CIA, at least while we see him in Vietnam.
