finally saw it

they sugarcoated it to make Hawking's abrasive personality more tenable. not bad overall.

reply

It was above average and more than tolerable for a prestige Oscar-bait movie...

Here's the thing... with these types of bios the interesting thing about Hawking is his work, not his illness... It was a bit too disease-of-the-week in parts...

Ultimately a forgettable movie, but not one I regret watching... Would probably have been more interesting if they did something more avant garde, maybe filmed it as a musical? 😂

reply

a musical ?? the lead character can't even speak

reply

They'll find a way!

All joking aside... it did need something to set it apart from the earnest Oscar-type movies... I guess it would be too much of a challenge to try to dramatise physics...

reply

Yeah, well, Eddie Redmayne's range as an actor ranges from bashful glances to sweet smiles. He doesn't do abrasive, even if he should.

reply

His range can be excellent. As much as a lot of us want to see him play a good guy as often as possible. I think he could easily be a great villain in a Marvel or DC movie. I want to see him play Carnage or Riddler.

reply

I actually saw him attempt a villain role once, in the thankfully forgotten "Jupiter Ascending", a.k.a. the film that ended the Wachowski's careers. He was dreadful, wispy and wimpy, he tried for quiet menace and came off as wispy. Or wimpy.

And that's one of the reasons I think he has no range, I've seen what happens when he tries to step outside his wheelhouse.
