I don't know who rigged the academy awards, but they did the wrong thing. Birdman was art and entertainment to the fullest. Keaton perfectly embodied what we all feel in searching for that thing in life that defines us, that elevates us, as far as purpose, craft and desire. Shame on the academy for failing to recognize a truly life defining performance.
One thing I noticed about the Oscar nominations this year - mediocre films (with exception of Birdman which, from the cinematic standpoint, was a "job well done") but amazing performances by leading male actors.
Which is why I wish they didn't give awards for Best Actor this year. Because how do choose among Redmayne, Keaton, Cumberbatch, Cooper? I find all these performances outstanding. But they had to choose one and they chose Redmayne. I don't think it meant he was "better" than Keaton or the others. I think the Academy simply acknowledged that his task was the most challenging one and he accomplished it superbly. It was a recognition of a "job well done" from the craftsmanship standpoint.
I always look at it this way. Could Keaton have played hawking as good. No fricking way. The guy was amazing and deserved the oscar. I like Keaton but come on. Did you watch the transformation in Theory. The guy truly was Hawking.
Is this a f-cking joke? The biggest criticism of this movie is that it merely skims the surface of Hawking's life. You know just as much about the man after the film as you did before the film. It's the most superficial biopic I've ever seen. It has as much depth as a Lifetime movie-- hell, I believe there are actually some Lifetime movies that more character development than TTOE. Birdman is real art, TTOE is Oscar-bait trash.

he's a man living with a devastating illness and the film goes into depth about just how much that ruins his life. if that's not enough depth for you, you might want to check if there's a heart beating in your chest or if it's just stone. I have spina bifida and while i may not have a disease that may kill me, some days i wish it did, so sorry if i didn't feel sorry for a white middle aged washed up actor with white man problems.
